Dealer charge for synthetic oil??

I brought my 14 Silverado to dealership (Commonwealth in Ma) for first oil change. They offer two years of free oil changes (or 4 total). I asked for a full synthetic oil instead of the mixed blend and said I'd pay the difference.

When I picked up the truck the bill was $60.00. How can $60 be the difference? I am curious if anyone else had the same experience.

Well part of the reason could be that these trucks (not sure about the V6) with the V8s take 8 quarts of oil so that's $7.50 more for each quart. I also think they wanted to make a little extra money off of you. I just let them put in what the engine started with and when I start to change my own after the 2 years I'll switch to full synthetic. Honestly, for what they charged I would just pay a little more for the full synthetic oil and filter and just do it myself. You should have asked what they would charge extra before hand.

What do they charge for a quart of blend? What do they charge for the full syn? Wouldn't think there would be a 6 dollar difference per quart, but then again you never know.

The blend is what they would normally use and it would be free. Not sure about the charge outside of the 2 year maintenance warranty.

Sounds like they charged you almost what a full synthetic oil change would cost and did not prorate it ... If they did charge you correctly (prorated) that would be like a $120.00 oil change. I would question those Cowboys on how the came up with that price.

I only had the dealer change the oil in my last truck once (this one never). They charged me $85.00 for a synthetic change. It's highway robbery. The free oil change things are pretty much just a gimmick to get you in to get more $$, or so I believe.

The included 2 year oil changes does not call for Synthetic oil. Its a synthetic blend, which is perfectly fine. Just use the free changes and have it changed every 5000 miles. Once you are done with those "free" changes. Use whatever you like.

But I figured that price of the "free" changes was built into the truck. I might as well use them to my full advantage, regardless of the oil they are using.

It costs me 57 dollars to use mobil 1 synthetic and the good fram filter. To some people it may be worth the extra 28 dollars not to have to fool with it. Not me though.

Not to highjack this thread, you may want to research that fram filter. That's one area you want to buy the best.

Ya I used to use nothing but Fram fitlers, but after seeing they're all cheaply made I changed to Mobil 1 filters. Just look up on YouTube for people cutting open oil filters.

Yea me too, when in doubt and under warranty I buy at the dealer and keep the receipt.

I'm letting the dealership do mine indefinitely with the blend. My truck can't tell the difference between me running full synthetic or the blend percentage wise. I could run full synthetic for at least 10000 miles but the computer in the truck would be way overdue and I don't want that showing up if something were to happen.

Correct.

The computer doesn't sample the oil. It does it's calculations assuming that the recommended oil is in use.

Never did and never will use one.

I read about those POS Fram's a long time ago.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
