Power Outlet in Dash

Recommended Posts

I have one power outlet in the dash. Regular WT pickup w/o 110 outlet. It is hot all the time. I would like to have this outlet go on when the vehicle starts and shuts off when I shut down the truck. The one in the arm rest shuts off. I thought I saw something about moving a fuse but I can't seem to find it.

Is there a reasonable way to convert it over? I don't want it on all the time so I can plug in my GPS etc. and don't want to plug it into the arm rest. If so, please give me some directions.

Owner's Manual is your friend...page 9-29, 9-30

Retained Accessory

Power (RAP)

The following vehicle accessories

can be used for up to 10 minutes

after the engine is turned off:

. Audio System

. Power Windows

. OnStar System (if equipped)

. Sunroof (if equipped)

These features work when the key

is in ON/RUN or ACC/

ACCESSORY. Once the key is

turned from ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF,

the windows and sunroof continue

to work up to 10 minutes or until any

door is opened. The radio continues

to work for up to 10 minutes or until

the driver door is opened.

Accessory Power Outlets (APOs)

The vehicle may have APOs in

several locations. See Power

Outlets on page 5-6.

The APOs in the console or center

seat position are powered by RAP.

They will continue to work for up to

10 minutes after the key is turned

from ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF, or until

the driver door is opened.

The APOs on the center stack come

from the factory powered directly

from the vehicle battery, and supply

accessory power at all times,

regardless of ignition key position.

If electronic items are left plugged

into these APOs for long periods of

time with the vehicle off, the vehicle

battery could be drained. The

vehicle may not start if the battery is

allowed to drain for an extended

period of time.

The source of power for the APOs

on the center stack can be changed

from direct battery power to RAP by

moving the fuse at location 10, in

the left instrument panel fuse block,

to position 11. Once the fuse is

moved, the APOs will continues to

work for up to 10 minutes or until

the driver door is opened. See

Instrument Panel Fuse Block (Left)

on page 10-49 or Instrument Panel

Fuse Block (Right) on page 10-52.

If you are not comfortable

performing this change, see

your dealer.

I checked my manual and it doesn't have the same wording about changing the fuses around. Fuse box for #10 is cargo light, #11 Accessory Power outlet, #101 Accessory Power outlet1/ Cigarette lighter. I am assuming the power outlet in the dash (always hot) is plugged into the cigarette lighter. I checked with one Chevy dealership (2/18) today and the person told me I couldn't change it over because it is hot wired directly to the battery. A fuse change doesn't change the wiring issue. I will check with another Chevy dealership but information on the internet states the same thing.

i'd love to make the console cig lighter always on like the dash cig lighters. this doesn't look like it will solve that issue though.

Why? I would like everything to just shut off when I turn the key off.

Pete,

Did you ever get a solution to this? I purchased a 2015 GMC Sierra and wanted to run a dash cam, but want it's power off whenever I turn the ignition key off, and the way it's set up now, the cigarette lighter is always "hot". Thanks

Made it bigger for you. Solution is below - Owners Manual Excerpt

moving the fuse at location 10, in

Did you look in your fuse box and try switching the fuse block over. This is an option on my truck still. You can see where it changes RAP or direct wiring.

Exactly what the others said above.

  • Remove the fuse box cover that is located on the left side of the dash (open the driver's door and carefully pry off the left end panel beside the air vent).
  • Look at the diagram on the back of the panel. Move the large fuse from location 10 to location 11 (there are 6 slots in the fuseblock but the fuse has 4 legs so the middle 2 slots are always used).
  • Replace cover. The outlets below the HVAC controls will now shut off after RAP times out.

This works for all 2014-2016 Silverados and Sierras.

Now as others have said I would like to find a way to make the outlets in the console and on the rear of the console stay hot all the time ...

mine also had no wording about the fuse swapping:

The vehicle may have APOs in
several locations. See Power
Outlets on page 5-6.
The APOs in the console or center
seat position are powered by RAP.
They will continue to work for up to
10 minutes after the key is turned
from ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF, or until
the driver door is opened.
The APOs on the center stack come
from the factory powered directly
from the vehicle battery, and supply
accessory power at all times,
regardless of ignition key position.
If electronic items are left plugged
into these APOs for long periods of
time with the vehicle off, the vehicle
battery could be drained. The
vehicle may not start if the battery is
allowed to drain for an extended
period of time.
Thanks for confirming this. As far as the one inside console and rear of cab I have no clue but I do know there is a whole other fuse panel on the passenger side. Almost makes me wonder if you open it if you will see a like the reverse (fuse is in RAP slot and AlwaysOn slot is empty). Could be worth a look but do not start swapping anything unless you now for sure.

My 2015 does not have the wording in the manual either but if you look at the driver's side fuse diagram like I said in my post it will show you. The diagram says something like "#10 DC" and "#11 RAP" (I'm not sure that is the exact wording since I'm not at the truck right now but it's something close to that. Just look for the setting that says "RAP").
