Bolt action / Semi auto

So i am just really starting to get into guns.

My first one is a S&W AR15-22 , I then bought my Remington 870 Express Tactical 12ga. , And then a Gamo bone collector .177 air rifle that i use for match / and indoor fun.

So since Cuomo started the whole safe act bullshit, I had to modify my .22 S&W to get rid of the pistol grip and couldnt have the adjustable stock.

Since doing this my match score has gone down. I was #7 out of 50 people... then I went up to 13 or so.. Not to bad for a beginning shooter going up against experienced / veterans but still pissed me off.

So our new match is coming up next month and i want to get a diffrent gun.

This may be more NY specific with the safe act or it may be the same but I am tempted at getting a Bolt action .22.

The question is, does a Bolt action rifle classify as semi automatic becasue of the detachable mag, or is semi auto only classified as self feeding?

My thought is if i get a bolt action i can modify it any way i want so i dont have to worry about this safe act crap.

Opinions please...

Bolt action is never classified as a semi auto. However, maybe there are some regulations on removable magazines where you are? So I'd check into that too.

Yea, I have to look into it more.

I really wanted to get the ruger 10/22 black synthetic / stainless barrel combo but once I start adding things it will classify it as an assault weapon.

All different ways to go. A bolt is fine, maybe the 10/22 is O.K. In NY too. Then over to handguns, a double-action 357 is very versatile too.

Your choice will also depend on your competition use (speed vs. accuracy). If you are solely looking at accuracy, a bolt action gun is where I would go. If you are looking for speed, semi-auto is usually your best option. Don't get me wrong, an experienced shooter can run a bolt gun pretty quick but nothing like a semi-auto. Unfortunately you are in NY with additional regulatory concerns which limits your options. Good luck!

Well i made a choice and i love it!

Savage Arms , Bolt action , thumbhole stock, Stainless heavy barrel.

Just got my Hawke Optics 3-9x40 scope in the mail today, mounted it and its ready for breaking in / sighting tomorrow!

Whats everyones thought on dryfiring a rimfire? The guy in store (older guy who is very well versed with guns) told me it wont hurt it... Ive always been told not to tho. Ddint know if its diffrent with a bolt action tho.

I did dry fire it maybe 10 times allready when i was lubing it up and trying to break it in.

Thats what i thought.. If i have any issues tomorrow trying to sight it / fire for the first time its going back to that guy for telling me i can, lol

Doing it a few time shouldn't hurt but overtime it can damage the breach face.

I did some research on it, and a lot of guys just say to use a spent shell, or by some plastic rounds or snap caps..

What does the manual say about dry firing? If it doesn't call the manufacturer. Nothing else snap caps like ya said. I dry fire my center fires with no worries, rim fires are a bit different.
