2015 Max Tow Package: When Available to Order?

Recommended Posts

Please let us know when GM accepts your order for a truck equipped with the max tow package, whether it be with a 5.3L or a 6.2L engine.

My dealer just ordered a 5.3 max tow Sierra for me on Wed or Thurs of last week. I have not been told it wasn't accepted. Any reason it wouldn't be?

Several have reported that they are again accepting orders for the 6.2L NHT.

AFAIK, it was always possible to order 5.3 with max tow (max tow is the only way to get trailer mirrors - there is lots of those posted on here)

Earliest TPW that I recall posted was week of 23 Mar 2015.

My dealer is telling me the Max Tow Pkg is restricted, regardless of engine. I have been trying to order one with a 6.2L engine for months. After reading about the problems some owners are having with the 8 speed I changed my order to a 5.3L engine. I did that about 2 weeks ago and still no word from my dealer that GM has accepted my order. We were hoping my order would be accepted this week.

I'm simply trying to keep informed regarding GM's acceptance of orders for new trucks with the Max Tow Pkg. To the best of my understanding GM has not delivered a 2015 truck with the MTP. Am I mistaken?

I have a 6.2/NHT order that got accepted first week of march with a TPW of 3/23. I would think that means dealers can order them now, but who knows.

I believe they have been shipping 5.3's with max tow all along.

Why is GM offering a "max tow package" with the 5.3L engine? That doesn't make sense at all seeing it does not have the same capacities as the 6.2L trucks. Seems their packages may be a little misleading. The 5.3L simply can not tow/haul what the 6.2L can.

No, but it's close. Max tow is about more than HP.

Max Trailering Package, includes 9.76" rear axle, (GT4) 3.73 rear axle ratio, with (MYC) 6-speed automatic transmission, (JL1) trailer brake controller, enhanced cooling radiator, revised shock tuning for increased control, heavier duty rear springs and increased RGAWR
A 'Max Tow' 5.3L has a higher tow rating than a 'standard' 6.2L.

I got the max tow b/c I wanted the extra payload, a beefier axle, the mirrors, and the gearing for when I jump up a size in tires. I didn't want to wait for a 6.2 and the 5.3 is a very capable engine. I haul quite frequently so this truck is what I needed/wanted short of a HD.

Ordered my cc 5.3 max tow feb 1st and it is supposed to be here by the end of the month. We are flat around here and sometimes premium is hard to find so for me the 5.3 makes sense. Also I didn't want to pay for a ltz to have to get the 6.2. My truck will be towing right near its max with my gooseneck cattle trailer on. Will be interesting to see how it does.

You're right that the 6.2 is more capable than the 5.3...but the chassis and running gear are identical and 2807 only reflects a minimum standard of performance (speed up a given hill and temp).

Mine supposedly will be built sometime between the March 23rd and 30th is what I was told, and a delivery to Canada by the end of April which is fine with me.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
