Advice for payload mods (bags, etc)

I bought my truck for home renovations and have been doing a lot of hauling (no towing.) The truck sags really, really badly when at max payload and feels squirrelier on the interstate. Not dangerous or anything, but it loses a lot of its composure. It was really apparent this weekend when I hauled pavers and mulch and I almost wished I would have purchased the 2500. Had to make three trips because of weight.

I'd like to at least be able to haul the recommended payload without the rear being 6 inches off the ground, so my first thought was to add bags to the back. I've never used bags or owned a vehicle with bags, so I'm unsure how that works. I've done a lot of work on trucks and cars, but haven't come across bags yet.

So here's my questions for you guys:

Do bags replace the leaf springs or do they help the leaf springs?

What bag kit would you recommend, I looked into the Airlift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate kit?

Are there any other modifications that would help with payload hauling?

Thanks

I have hauled a pallet of grass (3000 pounds +) and mine did OK. Were you hauling more than that?

I was hauling about 2000lbs or right under. I was exaggerating the squat (6 inch from the ground.) 3000 seems like a lot!

If you have a 1500, you are over your payload when hauling 2000lbs.

If I had to guess without looking, your payload is 1200-1600lbs

That would be on the high side.

Load 1: 45 bags of 30lb mulch = 1,350lbs + 150lbs of gear + me 185lbs = 1,685lbs

Load 2: Pavers were 12lbs each x 110 + 10 bags + gear + me = 1955lbs

Load 3: 100 pavers + 15 mulch + gear + mee = 1985lbs

Door label says ~1785lb payload. Moving right around the payload capacity, slightly overloaded on the last two. My question is not how to increase or bypass the legal payload of my truck. My question is how to modify it where it handles max payload better than stock.

Thanks

Bags would be best but leaf helpers also come in cheap and costly. I had hi-jacker air shocks (150 psi but 200 max) and an extra leaf I took off a junkyard truck on the regular cab, as my signature shows...it held up a 7,500lb camper (unsure on tongue weight) but rode like crap when empty.

Thanks for the links. From what I understand, adding springs will reduce sag but cause a bad ride. I do a lot of unloaded traveling too, so I'd like to retain the stock unloaded ride. It seems the adjustable bags are the best choice.

I installed the Firestone bags. They were an easy install and they've been working great.

I looked into that kit too, but I couldn't find out if it came with the internal bump stops like the airlift kit.

Riding pretty low, but not on the stops. My 13 could do it too. You can feel it most laterally, like going around a curve. I may have to do it again Friday...if I do I'll snap a pic.

Would love to see a pic of 3klbs loaded on our trucks. I think you need bags more than me :)

    • There was talk over the last couple of years that the contract to build these trucks between GM and International would not be renewed.  International moved production of all their other trucks besides the companion CV model out of the Springfield plant some time ago when they opened their San Antonio plant.  That left Springfield only building the Silverado Medium Duty, International CV Series, and some Express/Savanna long wheelbase cutaways.  International also put the plant up for sale some time ago.  This all answered my earlier question as to why GM and International did nothing with these trucks since they were introduced, as they had basically become a market 'placeholder' with a finite life.    The Silverado Medium Duty/International CV trucks were interesting combination of a GM powertrain, electrical system, and K2XX Silverado cab with an International chassis that was supposedly designed for a step-van type vehicle they never produced.  They were manufactured in International's Springfield plant along with the IH MV series initially.  When first introduced, there was much talk that the Silverado Medium Duty/CV would eventually get a gasoline engine option along with other upgrades and GM and IH would work on a class 6/7 joint venture truck.  This was before VW bought Navistar out, after that happened no more was said.  Draw your own conclusions...   About the time talk started that the GM/IH joint venture was not going to be renewed, rumors started that GM would develop a new line of medium duty trucks themselves.  The story is the new trucks will be part of the next generation HD's due in 2028, and will still feature a 'straight rail' chassis design that the current medium duty has.  GM views this as a desirable feature that differentiates their truck from the competition.  A gasoline engine option is also expected.  As the current Silverado Medium Duty remains in production until September 2026 and there is still a lot of inventory available do not expect any official word for some time.   I believe GM remains committed to their successful partnership with Isuzu, and all the LCF models will still be available from Chevy Commercial dealers.  Isuzu is on the cusp of opening a new large plant in South Carolina and there is also speculation that this may result in new product for both Isuzu and Chevy Commercial dealers.
    • drive the truck back to the dealer and complain that the button works.

    • I have a 2026 2500 HD Ultimate. My phone app says there’s a software update available. It’s something about improved battery management and something to do with the running boards. I follow the instructions for the update but the “Check for Updates” option is greyed out in my settings menu. Has anyone else seen this? How did you resolve it? The help message just says “see your dealer” if the download doesn’t work. I’m just trying to save a trip.
    • Fuel mileage?  That's all how you use your right foot.  Exhaust will give you sound.   Stock exhaust 5.3 is 2.75" diameter piping.     If the truck is nice and worth putting some $$ into it, I'd go for a Corsa catback.  I had one on my 2019 old body 5.3 and it was just perfect.  Zero drone, just driving around and cruising on the highway you'd think it was stock, but when you opened it up it was like a Camaro with the factory dual mode.  Corsa bumps their catback to 3in diameter.
