Fords solution for speeding

One wouldn't need a speed limit when people were finaly getting the concept of "slow lane" and "fast lane".

That's the only reason why the Autobahn still exists.

And as for the "Richtgeschwindigkeit" (recommendet speed). On open stretches on the Autobahn is still the recommendet speed in effect: 130km/h.

You drive faster and be in an accident you'll be the one who's gonna take the blame because of "excessive speed". You may even loose the insurance coverage.

Something many "Autobahn-tourists" don't know.

Well my one visit to Germany in the Munich area had the roadway under construction so I only got up to a blazing 100 km/h.

I should add that was also in a Gulf wagon with a diesel and five of us in it. Acceleration was leisurely. lol

I just heard on the news this morning about a wreck 1 exit from mine on I-20. The speed limit there is 70. The cop on the radio said "they were goin too fast.. like 65-70." uuuhh.. so they were doing the speed limit or 5 under officer?

I saw a 35mph sign today that someone had painted to say 85. It was so good it had me fooled for a split second until I saw the paint had ran a bit. Had me laughing for a good while. Wanted to stop and take a pic but thought slamming on brakes and running off the road may have been confusing to the dump truck right behind me.

I agree, traveling with the flow of traffic is more important. I argue that commuters have 2 jobs.. one of them is their job they're commuting to, the other is towing the line in traffic while commuting to said job. If you drive 10-15mph below everyone else and keep a huge gap in front of you you're causing a problem and you aren't doing your part. (unless its moving like 3mph.. then keeping a gap allows people to travel between lanes..)

If there's anything I'd like to see a company implement in vehicles its more of an auto drive in bumper to bumper situations. It senses the car in front of it and creeps forward and applies brakes as needed to keep a moderate distance so that you dont have to do it. Like cruise control for 3mph commutes. Seems less nanny than a speed limit cap.

what you have pretty much described is a fusion of Adaptive Cruise Control, and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Well, welcome to my world. Your government, who cares for you, has proposals already drawn up and submitted to OMB for speed limiting commercial trucks. No clear details on speed, but most believe it will be 65 like Ontario Canada did. So, on a busy interstate with a speed limit of 75 lets say, you will have a hundred trucks all jockeying for position. One can do 65, one can only do 64, based on little variances like tire wear and such. Oh, the 65 truck can't deal with the 64 truck, so the driver will take 5 miles to pass the slower one, blocking up all traffic behind him and generating some new swear words from motorists. States keep raising speed limits while the Feds (with the blessing of anti trucking groups like the American Trucking Association and the Truckload Carriers Association) are slowing trucks.

Well, Ford just wants to have everyone feel our pain.

Most trucks in Michigan are already limited. 60 seems common and it's horrible when two of them try to pass each other, especially since they're already slow as hell since we allow more weight than most states.

Every time i'm on the interstate, I notice a pattern: the trucks that hold everybody up usually belong to Large Companies that have trucks that are less than 6 years old, then Govern the Road Speed to "Save Fuel". with the Current Heavy Duty Emissions Standards, (DPF, SCR and EGR) the Trucks are BURNING MORE Fuel than they are Saving it! the Main culprit is the Diesel Particulate Filter System; during a regeneration cycle, the Thing LITERALLY DUMPS FUEL into the Exhaust Stream to burn off the soot that builds up in the DPF! a Prime Example of the Fatal Flaws of DPF is one of Ford's VERY OWN PRODUCTS: the 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel Engine.

I really do not understand why some people here feel the need to drive 80 MPH on the highway.

Have you ever heard of MPG, safety, efficiency?

Anything over 60 MPH, DRASTICALLY reduces your fuel economy. Hell, even the difference between 60 and 65 is very noticeable. Why would you want to go from say, 24 MPG at 60 MPH, down to 16 just so you can do 80 MPH? Despite what some people might think, 80 MPH is not safe. The faster you are going, the less time you have to react, and the more it's going to hurt if you have an accident of any kind, if you even survive. I have over a million miles of heavy haul trucking experience under my belt, and I can tell you there is absolutely no reason to be driving more than 60 - 65 MPH. Want to get there faster? Take a plane or get on an express train.

The Government goes to all this effort to mandate cleaner burning vehicles, and it's worked, they burn cleaner than ever. However, what is the point when the operator of the vehicle drives it so fast that it cannot get any decent fuel economy anyways? Once again, the decisions of individual human beings leads to more trouble in our world.

People get all uptight about laws, rules and regulations. As long as people keep doing stupid things, or doing whatever the hell they feel like doing, more rules and regulations will come. I for one do not believe most people should even be allowed to make decisions for themselves. The majority of the public are complete, total idiots with little to no common sense. Guy who drives like a total dick has a kid, and his kid learns to drive like a total dick from him, and so on and so forth. We are left with a society full of assholes who think it should be OK to do whatever the hell they want to, ignoring the rules. Watch someone drive, more times than not, it is related to their personality. Drive like a douche, 98% chance that you are, without a doubt, a total douche.

If people weren't so good at doing stupid things and breaking the law all the time, the Government would have no need to continue finding ways to Govern us "monkeys" any further.

Those new emission laden trucks, mostly those less than 3 yrs old, are doing pretty impressive on mpg. It is not uncommon for heavy commercial trucks to average in the 8 mpg range nowadays. Recent testing has shown new designs coming out topping mid 9 mpg range for an average. Compare that to the average of 10 years ago of 5-5.5 mpg. If we extrapolated the increase out to what we should be getting in modern pickups, 30 mpg for averages would be common place.

But irregardless of anything like this, the primary argument by government and interest groups is truck safety. It is safer, to them, to have a dozen trucks choking up the road so that no one can get on by than to just leave things alone. If companies want to slow their trucks down for whatever reason, mostly insurance, then let them. Mandates.....

It really isn't about driving slow, I pay the bills on my semi and I drive "slow", usually around 62. I like getting good mpg and long life out of my tires, brakes, etc. But, when I need to pass someone, I am not goofing off in the left lane all day long. I kick it in the butt and get it moving then get back over to the right and go back to what I was doing. If trucks are choked to some max speed, there is where the problems begin.

But, your government cares for you.

1. I could care less about fuel economy.

2. It has been proven repeatedly that higher speed limits do not result in more accidents.

1. Ok, throwing away money for no reason is your own choice and your right.

2. I did not say anything about speed being the CAUSE of an accident. I said, when something happens, events unfold in a split second, your ability to react, make the right decision, and execute that decision, is greatly lessened at 80 MPH than at 60 MPH. I would love to see you react to a blown out steer tire at 80 MPH.

Yeah because tire blowouts happen all the time with modern passenger vehicle tires. I could care less what they decide with trucks, it's already an over-regulated industry and there is no turning back from that.

unfortunately, most Truck Driving schools nowadays don't teach their students proper driving etiquette, the drivers that are coming out of those schools are nothing more than Steering Wheel Holders with Superiority Complexes. there has been PLENTY of times where I've been Passing a couple of trucks in my Aveo, and the Second Truck decides he wants to pass the First truck While I'm RIGHT BESIDE HIM in the Fast lane, and I have to BURY the Throttle to complete my pass. then there are those trucks that dart into the left lane when I'm about to pass them at Full Interstate Speed, and I have to quickly tap my Brakes (and usually, I have my Cruise Set) so I don't go sailing into their trailer's underride guard! (and in my Aveo, crashing into an underride guard WILL result in me losing my life!)

I've noticed this too, especially here in the midwest where truck traffic is much, much heavier than it was in the northeast. It seems like schools are just churning out these guys without any road manners.
