2014/2015 AFM oil usage?

Recommended Posts

I had a 2008 GMT900 6.0L Vmax. Justin did a custom tune, but I had him leave AFM active. It never burned any noticeable amount of oil between changes up till the time I sold it at 150,000 miles. I changed the oil when the OLM light came on and put in M1. My brother owns it now.

This 2014 5.3L is about 20,000 miles and I've not noticed any oil burn.

I thought the 6L Vmax didn't have AFM? It was only the 5.3.

Nope, the 6.0L had AFM. Justin asked me a couple times about disabling it. I kept it.

I know in 2007 the only engine that had AFM was the 5.3L. I looked up GM engines and the 6L L96 and LC8 did not have AFM. It looks like the 6.2 L94 did but was used on higher end Denali's.

I think Justin may have been mistaken I really don't think that truck had AFM and most likely why you never burned any oil. In all the research I did on the oil consumption issue, people were specifically syaing the 6L Vmax did not have the issue because it didn't have AFM and anyone with those trucks was very lucky.

I mean I could be wrong I'm not trying to be an ass here. Just talking man.

Maybe I'm confusing the 6L in the HD trucks with the Vmax in the 1500's?

EDIT: It appears the Denali 6.2's did have AFM but the 6.2 on the regular trucks did not. From what I'm reading now. Did you have a Denali?

Well I did some more research and you are correct. Looks like it was the L76 engine and was in use from 2007-2009 and it did have AFM. My apologies for doubting you and Justin. I have no idea what I was remembering but I'm glad I didn't bet my life on it.

The oil consumption due to the AFM as allegedly fixed in 2011 so I'd hope that with the new Ecotec3 engines, that "fix" was part of this new design.

"Allegedly" being the key word here. There are reports of 2011-2012-2013 models having oil usage problems. That's part of the reason I was asking the 2014-2015 owners if they had the same problems. For the last 20+ years, we've been an all-GM family, but now my Dad is currently looking at a Ford Ecoboost and I'm looking at Ram Ecodiesels.

In my opinion you guys are looking at replacing a problem truck with 2 other problem trucks. Tell your dad to do himself a favor and go buy a Tundra....

Hareek, ye better be reading on Tundra forums like me first! They sell far fewer trucks, but I see a lot more problems on Tundra sites! Cam tower oil leaks, rear axle bearings, water pumps, air intake pumps, etc., etc. And, those things are EXPENSIVE to fix! Plus sucking up gasoline like it's still $.79 a gallon.

That may all be true but the forums are generally filled with people that have problems. For all manufacturers. In my personal life, every 2014+ GM truck owner I have met has some kind of complaint about their truck. Every Toyota owner I know loves their rig without a single problem to report. I realize that isn't a scientific analysis but it is what is.

I just came home from a 2,000 mile trip. I turned on the the V4 for the trip for a test I've been on this trip before. The best I gained with it on was a little over 1 mile per gallon, sure is a lot of tech and and moving parts for little gain. I got no gain in town, it going back off, and I'm open the exhaust back up a little for that V8 sound.

Negative, Ghost Rider. Hell would freeze over first. No offense to the Tundra lovers out there, but my Dad fought in Korea and his dad fought in WWII. So being an old-school patriot, he would only consider purchasing a Ford, GM, or Ram. No Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, Mercedes, BMWs, etc. for him. (Yes, I know, the assembly plant locations and the percentage of parts contents for the 'imports' is really muddy waters these days compared to the 'domestic' companies, and Ram is technically owned by FIAT from Italy.)
