Have 2010 Tahoe last summer A/C worked great, this year it will not work. Hit snow flake and it blinks 3 times and shuts off.

Here is some tech info:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment that the Air Conditioning (A/C) indicator on the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Control Module flashes then turns off after they press the A/C button.

This is normal operation for the HVAC Control Module and indicates that the A/C function is not available at this time.

Reasons that the A/C may not be available (calibrated values vary by program) are listed below. Consult the appropriate vehicle Service Information (SI) for detailed HVAC Description and Operation:

1 • Ambient Air Temperature is too low (if equipped with Ambient Air Temperature Sensor)
2 • Vehicle voltage less than 9.5 volts
3 • Refrigerant Pressure too low
4 • Refrigerant Pressure too high
5 • Engine Coolant Temperature too high
6 • Engine is not in RUN
7 • HVAC Control Head is in the OFF position

The reason(s) A/C is currently disabled can be viewed with a Tech 2® by navigating to HVAC Data display and viewing the "A/C Permission" parameter.

So right off the bat lets rule out #2, #6, and #7

Then lets ask: Does the AC work when the motor is cold (first 5 minutes of driving?)

If answer is No then rule out #5 and most likely #4

So question #1 Do you have "AUTO" mode as a setting on your AC ?

If the answer is NO you may need a bottle of freon

(not too hard a task for most people)

Let me know

Are you gonna wreck a newer veh with store bought propane or whatever it is as freon is a thing of the past ,

R134a is what you want , can't do it at home

So the bottle of AC recharge stuff from parts store won't work?

Posted

In the USA they even sell R134a at Kmart, even though it's not R-12, R-22 some of us still call R134a "Freon"

DareDog, Just follow the gauge and only add it if it is low

Let us know how you make out, its a cheap test, if the gauge says you don't need it return it or save it

ALSO, keep in mind if it is not a low freon problem, the gauge may read very high

(being the compressor is not running)

On a side note, I also service home HVAC and some of the older systems still use R-22, that stuff is up to over $400 bucks for a 30 pounder, only "recycled" R-22, No Virgin stuff left

Good Luck !!

Also, try the reset first

Does you AC have the "AUTO" feature?

IF SO:

Press the AC & Recirculation buttons simultaneously with your index & middle finger. (The recirculation button is right above the AC button). This causes the an instant temperature update to your system and allow your AC to come on and stay on afterwards

Not the best idea to add refrigerant to the system unless you know how the system operates and have a set of manifold gauges you can refer to before, during, and after the recharge. Even then you don't have a vacuum pump, dye, etc.

Remember, the 134 A they sell for do it yourselfers is just a small can, not going to do any damage with that, It's either low on refrigerant or not, the gauge will tell him that..... He said he has done it before, most "guys" have, I've been adding refrigerant to cars since 1974 as a "poor" kid LOL

Don't remember, just try it both ways, then get the 134A (with gauge hose) as soon as you hook up the hose the gauge will tell you

If you are lucky you just need some 134A, if not time for service, did you check every fuse in both places (under hood too)

Good Luck !!

went to Walmart got can of it and it would not fit on it. talked with guy there and he said since its GM they have special size and have to take it to the dealer. went to advance auto and they had old can with hose on it put it on the fitting on the canister and it fit and gauge showed it was good. now time to go to the dealer.

Yes I think you should go to the dealer now
