Changing Amsoil - is it too soon?

I've got about 63k miles on the truck (2012 2500hd), about 50k on the current fill of 75w140 Amsoil SVO. I would guess about half those miles are hooked to a trailer between 1500 and 5000 pounds.

Should I change it out, is that considered severe?

You should be able to switch brands of oil whenever you wish. If you want to run Amsoil go for it, just be ready to pay a little extra when oil change time comes around.

They are cryptic, and fall back to manufacture specs...there is no change interval in the owner's manual.

Well, as I have read the owners manual on the last two pickups I have owned, it seems that unless one is only using the pickup as basic transportation, grocery getting, soccer games, etc, everything else seems severe. Just me using mine as basic transportation is classed as severe, because I have to drive several miles of dusty gravel roads to and from town. I use the Amsoil Severe Gear stuff in my diffs and I change things at 50K intervals. Only a few quarts, not like one has to take out a second mortgage to do the job. The beauty of the 2500 is that don't have to mess with rear cover. just pull drain plug and refill. Both front and back. Very simple, quick job. Worth it for a little peace of mind.

I am not into all the "you can go a million miles on Amsoil" kind of rot. I own commercial trucks and have well over 5 million miles under my seat driving them. I have learned one thing... being anal about scheduled services is worth it. I dearly love synthetics for various reasons, depending on the application, but I am not going to play games with $10K drive axles on my commercial trucks, I am not going to play games with my pickup diffs either. But I don't have Amsoil stuff in my commercial diffs, it is Mobil 1 in there. Came that way from the factory and stuck with it.

Look, you are asking, so you must have some concern. Ease your mind and just do the lube change. You will feel better and that is what matters. Is it critical to do it? Probably not. But without lube sample testing, there is no way to know. Just follow the recommended drain interval and change the stuff and don't try to overthink things. You will rest much easier.
