Quick question, I need a steering box for my 05 2500 HD 4wheel drive truck. How do I tell which one I need to order? There are 3 different ones showing at the parts store.

HD are usually 3 spline. To be 100% you wouldn't know until you pulled the box and then the pitman arm. Where are you shopping for it?

Local Napa , Advance Auto Parts, and local Auto Zone. I was also gonna check with AMAZON.com, they have the best prices for parts lately, Rockauto is great , but shipping kills the deal for me.

Gotcha. Chances are good its a 3 flat (the 33 grove box) but if you can down the truck I'd pull it to verify.

Can't you tell the dealer's parts department your VIN? They should be able to tell you what box is in the truck. Or at the least tell you what sector shaft it has. The auto store you are dealing with should also be telling you what information they need in order to supply the correct part.

Take a good look at the sector shaft above the pitman arm, sometimes there are enough splines to get the number of flat or index splines.

Out of those 3 local ones, go to NAPA. Trust me on this. A little more money, but if you plan on keeping the truck any length of time, you'll thank me later.

Negative on that. Even with the VIN the GM catalog does not narrow it down. They show two gear boxes for 2005, diesel and gas, but no spline count. If you go to look up the pitman arm, it asks if it is a 3 or 4 spline (33 or 32 as some aftermarkets label them) same for the idler arm count.
