Former Rental Certified Used Question

Hi all,

Looking for some help. I am currently looking at a 2015 Silverado LT1 4X4 with 26k miles. As per the title, it was registered as a rental in Colorado then (I'm assuming) sold at dealer auction in AZ and has been certified used by this dealership.

I know there are several opinions on former rentals. I've also read (probably too much) about Certified car fraud. My question is, how do I verify that this car is actually "Certified" by GM and that this vehicle has all original parts and body panels? I already checked Carfax and its clean, and I know that isn't always 100% accurate.

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!

All certified means is that it's been inspected to be in decent shape and it meets certain year/mileage restrictions. Certified doesn't mean what you describe with body panels. The certification is done by the selling dealer. It doesn't mean shit. But you usually get better warranty. That's about the only gain.

That's kind of what I was thinking. My thought process is to get one of those mobile mechanics to do an inspection for me and if he gives the green light and the dealer gets me the deal I want (its already at a good price) then it seems safe enough.

Prob a stupid question but, how can I verify the vehicle is Certified and that I can take the truck to any Chevy dealer for possible later warranty work? The thought that the selling dealer certifies the truck also makes me laugh.

All of the stuff I sell at my garage sales is certified with my stamp of approval :)

Hopefully you are getting a great price on the truck because I know when I get a rental I don't treat it very nice, and I consider myself one of the good guys.

I bought my daughter a previous rental and the carfax looked good, everything looked and worked fine.

A couple of years later the rear hatch and one quarter panel's paint jobs were deteriorating significantly more than the rest of the car which pointed to a body work from a crash that was not disclosed.

the 3yr/36mi bumper-to-bumper and the 10yr/100k mile drivetrain warranty transfers to you. so as long as you meet those requirements you will be covered under GM's warranty.

the certified part of getting a better warranty is about purchasing extended warranties.

as far as the body panels, when i go to look at a used car i check every single gap and run my finger on the gap. your finger will give you a good idea if the body panel is out of alignment even if you eye does not see it at first. don't forget to open the hood and check the inner part of the fender where it bolts to the actual inner fender. look to see if the bolts have been turned (bolt is shiny on the edges) look and feel for any over spray. look under the truck see if you see / feel any overs pray. check all the door jams, make sure you don't feel / see any over spray.

dont forget to check the oil and trans fluid, and smell it make sure it doesn't smell burnt. make sure all the windows and door locks work with the key fob and window / lock switches inside of the truck. (this part is not as important to check before you buy since you still have a little warranty left. ask them if they can see what service the vehicle has had, like bad trans, rear-end and stuff like that.

hope this helps, im sure there is some stuff i forgot but im sure someone will chime in.

Thanks everyone. After checking the truck out in person, it definitely looked abused. Lots of little scratches and dents all over. Nothing big, but too many for comfort especially on a black vehicle. Plus the drop-in bedliner was peeling up at the edge of the bed with lots of dirt underneath. Surprisingly the interior was in great condition.

I passed as I'm in no hurry.

I bought a daily rental from gm dealer. being a diesel truck mechanic I was able to take the truck to my shop and inspect it/ other than a small dent in the rear bumper the truck was a good as new, it only had 22000 kilometers. couldn't turn down the price. I have put 10000 on it in 2 months problem free

Depends if it was used by a rental company (Enterprise, Hertz) or used as a fleet truck. Large dealers usually have fleet service which will also show up as Rental on the title. I bought a 2015 Sierra with 3000 miles on it that was a "Rental" but I could tell it was a "city" truck versus a field truck because there was no stone damage to the fenders liners, there was not dirt on the undercarriage, and there were very few rock chips on the front of the truck.

As everyone has said, buy carefully and you can find some good deals on the rentals
