So I went on about a 3 hour road trip over Christmas to see some relatives. I noticed at around 70-75 mph there is a loud whistling noise that comes from (I think) the mirrors. It sounds as if you are blowing air over an empty beer bottle.. It is a similar tone. I folded the mirrors in while driving at the same speed and the noise subsided some, but I could still hear it.. It is extremely annoying. I live in Texas and the speed limit is 75 on rural highways. You can easily go 80 and not have a problem. Does anyone else have this issue? I think it might be the chrome mirror caps?

I wonder if an adjustment to the position of the glass would change the sound?

I am pretty sure when these trucks go into the wind tunnel in the design stages, 75 - 80 MPH is never tested or even thought of.

 

At that speed, I would count on wind noise and not be surprised. You are driving a full size pickup, AKA, a brick with wheels. Only a slippery sports car or crossover would likely not have any noise at and above those speeds.

Well yea I can understand that seems excessive but that is legal in Texas. I agree that they are likely not tested to those speeds in wind tunnels but you would think at 70 mph, you wouldn't have that sound. 70 mph is pretty common in a lot of states. And with this truck, going 70 feels like going 50. It drives like a car.

 

Edit: I also avg 25 miles to the gallon on the trip :)

Seeing as how much of the west is posted at 80 mph you can bet they are wind tunneling at 80+.

I wouldn't bet money on it. You know the fuel economy numbers for highway MPG? Those tests are done at 80 KM/H, or 50 MPH.

 

Does your driver door stick out slightly more than the front of your rear door? It is actually suppose to. If the front of your rear door is level, or higher than the back of your front door, it will scoop the air and cause a whistling noise in the cabin at highway speeds.

I have had it since April of 2015 and I haven't modified anything on the exterior of the vehicle. I noticed the noise about 2 months ago on the beltway here in Houston going about 70 but it only happened once.

 

This last trip it was happening almost constantly and it was really annoying!

I've got 29,500 miles on my 2014 Sierra, and this just started. When I'm bucking a headwind even at 55 mph, it happens on the drivers door. I'm pretty sure most of it was coming from my mirror cap but I'm also getting some noise from the leading edge of the doors weatherstripping.

 

I have tried banging on the mirror cap to tighten it up, as I think they snap on and off? The noise only happens with a strong headwind at 55 mph, and I haven't been out on the expressway going 70 mph since this started. I'm sure that the extra 15 mph might be enough to make it happen as well?

 

Up to this point, it has been as quiet as a Caddy. Going to monitor it for awhile to see if it comes back. I think the cold weather is a contributor but, this is also my third winter, so something is just not quite right.

 

It changes in intensity whenever another wind gust hits you.

I have what sounds to be the same whistle. It's at 70+ mph when I'm not following anyone (I would say not drafting, but some people think this means bumper to bumper). I folded the mirrors in and the noise didn't change. I think it something with the wipers or the weatherstripping in the door. I have some Honda Shin-etsu grease made for rubber seals, so I'm going to try that on the leading edge of the door seals and see if it helps. IF IT EVER QUITS RAINING!!!

 

Edit: 2014 with 23,xxx miles.

I bought a brand new 2015 Silverado on a Sunday and that next Friday, took it on a trip to California. At times, when going 75 MPH or above and a crosswind, the noise seems to be coming from the driver side door area. It is go bad, you can't hear the passenger talking. It doesn't happen all the time, seems to need a crosswind. There are blogs all over the internet about this issue, but when I took it to the dealer, they said they never heard of it and can't fix it, if they can't duplicate it (which won't happen on city freeways). I was hoping some one on this forum had a solutions. I wonder why the GM reps don't get involved??

Got the whistle noise yesterday. Windy day in north Texas. I was going about 70-75 and the winds were a crosswind. Mainly the passenger side but I did hear the driver side whistle once or twice.

 

I'm wondering if this is due at all to the avs aeroskin I put on last week? I'm gonna wait to see if it happens again before I get the dealer involved. Such an annoying sound.

My dads 08 Suburban used to whistle. Its the wind going between the mirror cap and the mirror housing. Try sealing it up somehow.

The whistling is coming from your window, not the mirror. I can barely lower my window and the noise stops. Just bump the window down.

I did. Noise was still there. Tried multiple windows. Still there.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
