Muffler swap vs cat back?

How much is the difference in sound between just putting in a less restrictive muffler and a whole new cat back exhaust? I'm also thinking about doing straight pipe too, so I'm open to all experiences and insight!

I cut the muffler off my truck and installed a pipe that dumped at the axle. I loved the sound but it was definitely a little much with the highway drone. Also I had the truck tuned so it wouldn't drop down to 4 cylinders.

Im actually interested in this myself because I just want to throw a muffler on for more sound aswell. I was thinking of going with a Flo Pro Tornado.

There are hundreds of muffler choices out there between length and flow type, all sounding diff. Each cat back sounds diff also. So the cheapest and easiest way would be to swap a muffler that you think sounds good. The Internet is full of clips. There's no performance gain in a cat back either.

If I was going to do a muffler swap I would just replace the muffler with a strait pipe, having said that I cannot stand a hacked leaky exhaust that is sure to rust out in no time.

Does anyone have more experience with this now? I've been looking again at either straight piping or possibly putting a different muffler on. A cat back would be nice, but if there isn't much difference then I might as well savs the money.

i was in the same boat a month ago. i decided on a cheap mbrp cat back instead of hacking my stock exhaust up. my thoughts might have been skewed if i had a friend who could have tig welded a muffler in for me. If you plan to keep V4 i would probably just get a muffler welded into the stock exhaust to keep the flapper. if you are getting rid of that id say take it out in once piece and go for a cat back. My mbrp is kind of loud accelerating but is nice on the highway it quiets right down. only time it irritates me is going to work at 630 in the morning.
