Thoughts on supercharger for 5.3

Why not just get a used V8 Camaro or Corvette that you can tinker with....I left a 2006 z06 corvette and 2011 MS3 and went to 5.3 15 Silverado LT Z71 for more practical purposes. The Truck still a lot of weight to throw around corners, even though you get the straight-line rush.

Trucks are king in Texas.... More sub 11sec trucks then cars.

Like i said before... I want it to be able to be at a light and smoke said camaro incase he decided to get froggy.

I can understand that, but here in New England we dont have the nice long straight roads like Texas. I go to my friends ranch every year by Corpus Christi and it was one of the reasons why I traded my cars for a truck. Yet on the tracks and twisties in New England, I would still prefer my sports cars. Overall I am very happy with my truck purchase and understand your joy at blowing away a Camaro. Years ago when I was a kid, a lot of guys here had IROC-Z camaros and thought thay they were the fastest things around, until a friend mine in his GMC Cyclone used to smoke those guys regularly. It was funny as crap. Being that most of the Camaros were driven by the Italians her in RI, We gave the IROC acronym an new name...

I boosted mine with a Magnuson SC. I have a '15 5.3 Z71 with a 5 inch lift and running 20 Inch rims with 33's from Mickey Thompson. Best Christmas gift given to me by my wife. The whole thing was a bolt on. Running 3.42 gears and the power is awesome. My 18 and 16 year old girls love it. It has a big kick in the butt. I had Magnuson disable the AFM and the whine is great with the added power. The whine can be heard only with the windows up. My mileage is 18 mpg combined if I drive like a grandpa. When I'm having fun it's 13 mpg, but who cares. Everyone I give a ride to, has a smile on their face.

Right on. Did you install and tune it yourself? I'm strongly considering the Magnuson for my 5.3 or pulling the trigger on a new 6.2L. How's the transmission run with the blower? Obviously better throttle response I imagine. Interesting you're getting 18mg combined taking it easy on her!

My wife and I installed the SC in a day and a half. Magnuson includes a shipping box and label to send the truck's computer to them 2nd day air. They did all the programming. The transmission shifts so much better than stock. There is no more hesitation or hunting for a lower gear. The acceleration is quite responsive and requires less pedal pressure. Torque is amazing from stop or slow roll.

I contacted Magnuson and they say they still don't have a kit. Maybe that's just for the 6.2L. Did they send you everything you needed and instructions, etc?

Hi, I purchased mine through Lingenfelter.com EVERYTHING was included in the kit. The kit is so well put together and the instruction manual is awesome.

I have a 6.2 but I will be calling them anyway. Maybe I'll also call Lingenfelter. I want to get a copy of the installation manual so I can see how the install will be before I order. I already got a copy of the Whipple Install manual and the Edelbrock E-force Manual.

Since you installed yourself, do you mind telling me what you paid for the kit? Their site only lists their cost with labor.

Everyone is going to have their opinions, some back them up with proven facts others just spout off recycled stuff they read off here. If you want a blower then go get one. Do your own research on the different brands and pick which you think suits your wants/desires the best. Personally I went with the Magnuson TVS 1900 and American Racing Headers (1 3/4"). Magnuson will put their tune on your PCM but I felt it was too much torque for what I use my truck for, it felt like it was meant to go balls to the wall and nothing else. So I bought an Auto Cal and had BBP make a tune for me based off my inputs and driving style. If you still aren't satisfied with the performance and power and want to really squeeze the most HP out of your 5.3 then add a custom cam and keep going from there. This is just my opinion, I'm not trying to start an argument or piss any one off.

Thanks for the input. Part of doing research is asking for feedback from anyone who's put one on their truck. The most valuable information is from those who have done it

How many miles do you have with your blower on the 5.3? Any issues?

I've put about 6K on the blower. The only issue i've had came from my headers, initially they were throwing codes because of the high flow cats. I had BBP turn them off with my tune and since then everything has been great.

    • The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, 4.3 VIN "W" engine. :cracks knuckles:   On a whim - because I needed a headache - this truck was for sale so I stopped to take a look. Doesn't run. Well, it does, but barely. Long crank, choppy idle, bad misfire(s), it REEKS of fuel. I can DO this..I'm thinking. Diamond in the rough. One owner until last year. A young guy is selling it, he bought it 6 months ago. It stranded him more than once, he's got a newborn. It was in the shop 10 days ago and he "thinks" they said it needs a new fuel injection system. He can't put any more money into it, needs it gone. I was thinking of upgrading my Macbook, which is a total want, not a need. For less than the price of a new laptop I can have fun for months tinkering on this truck and enjoying it. I'm taking this truck home. The guy was beyond thrilled, his wife was there, she thanked me profusely, I could tell they were hurting. They seemed like good people in a bind.   Some parts, a wash, maybe a set of tires, and I can have a few months of fun and then turn it for beer money (or the next project).   Sure enough, there's a work order from a shop last week in the INCHES of paperwork on this truck dating back to when the first owner bought it. They put a new distributor in it, fuel injection work describes basically opening the plenum and putting it back together. He said he couldn't afford any more work so he had them button it up and that's when he put it up for sale.   I'm not well versed in 4.3. I did discover 1995 uses the 1992-1995 SCPI "Spider" injector which is riddled with issues from splitting lines, clogged or cracked poppet valves and plastic spider legs that crumble over time. Cool. I'll just order me a ne---. Oh, the auto parts store doesn't have it? Rock Auto doesn't have it. eBay? $$$$$$ for used. These are UNAVAILABLE period end of story unless you know "a guy" who's still got one in a box somewhere.   Can't upgrade to the '96-'04 injector, it's a different plenum, wiring/pinout and sensor config.   There are a few kinda "know a guy" -guy rebuild services for these injectors out there for about $350. Okay, Okay... I'd like to know if anyone has used them? Anyone got a lead on these crappy 92-95 spiders?   I also don't want to send MY spider to Narnia and back without knowing if that's truly the problem. I guess I'll need to pull apart the plenum and do some digging.   I was also thrown for a loop. This 1995 model year truck has an OBD-II connector. The interface is decidedly not OBD-II. I can read and reset trouble codes and view live data, but there's not a lot of data. Like misfire count and on what cylinder, that's not there. It's OBD-1.5.   Nothing is ever easy. Now it makes sense why this guy wanted to disappear this thing for cheap. I'm guessing the shop told him the injector is toast, the part is unobtainable and they're not going to sort sending the thing to a rando offering rebuild service on craigslist, and the kid likely can't be without a working car for 3 weeks even if they'd facilitate that.   Experience with these early SCPI's? Stories? Things to check? Sympathy? (..Nah...)   This can sit until I sort it. But I haven't had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't easily solve in a long time.
