Thoughts on supercharger for 5.3

You should recheck...go see one apart and then look at an LS... about all they share is wrist pins. Pistons don't even remotely look the same thanks to direct injection with a cup in them like a diesel. I will reserve judgement when we can drag them from junkyards, toss studs in and have them live healthy lives with stock bottom ends and good doses of boost... I am thinking I will stress my 6.2 with that turbo setup I posted above.

I am not saying they are bad, they are likely just fine. My statement wasn't singling out the pistons... more just stating that it's not the same engine... because it isn't. I am just not running out saying these engines are like LS's because there is really nothing to back that yet with any volume. There are literally 10s of thousands of boosted beat stock bottom end LS engines out there... and with these ones not so much... it's just time and aftermarket. They probably will be... to a degree... I personally would like an iron block for a huge power build myself but these will probably do well.

 

Like maybe I am weird but my respect for an LS doesn't come from Lingenfelter... or Callaway or Hennessey or whoever... I don't give a damn about them honestly. No its from like Joe Dirt pulling an unknown mileage 4.8 from pick and pull... gapping the top compression ring if anything at all and hitting it with 15 pounds of boost from a 76 mm turbo and watching that engine do it over and over and over while making 600+ hp. That's insane when you think about it. That's respect... and we aren't there yet with the LT series stuff. Give it time... we might and we might not.

Hey all - I have a '15 Silverado Z71 custom sport crew cab with the 5.3. Thinking about getting a blower but wanted to get feedback from anyone who's put one on the 5.3.

 

Is the increase in power worth the ~$6k in your opinion?

 

I'm assuming adding one will void the power train warranty?

 

Any anecdotal info on long-term reliability of these things from anyone who put it on an older 5.3 would be appreciated.

What does the $6000 cover just the SC kit or install/tune too?

 

Trucks are a bit different than muscle cars because they're so heavy & meant for differ et purposes, but for $6000 man you could have a custom grind cam, ported TB & intake, reworked heads (if needed), LT headers, intake and tune and probably have change leftover and make plenty of power.

 

Someone mentioned a $13,500 kit too? I assume turbo- again, I'm sure it's wild, but that is crate motor territory....factory warrantied crate motor territory...

That 13,500 option is a whipple supercharger kit installed, tuned and warrantied (if that is even a word lol) by Hennessey Performance. Expensive butbyou get a powertrain warranty.

My ltz 6.2 NHT double cab was $40,500 otd. The 6.2 was $2500 extra. My brother has a '15. 5.3 and no way the 5.3 can touch my truck for $2500. Now if all you desire is a cloth interior with factory 17/18's etc that the ltz forces you to upgrade, then maybe you have a point. E85 with headers and an intake may match the peak numbers of the 6.2, but these heavy trucks require power under the curve.

They had a 6.2 on the lot when I bought my 5.3 Z71. Honestly, the 5.3 Z71 with 3.42 rear (the one I went with) felt like it had more power off the line than the 6.2 with 3.08 gears. I drove them back to back and went with the 5.3.

 

I'm looking to get more out of the 5.3 and figured a blower might be the answer. I'm having trouble finding anyone in my area who even does these installs on trucks

I did the install myself for the maggie on my '03 and it was easily done in a weekend. You could have done it all in one day, but it would have been too rushed to be fun. I've read the install manual for the maggies on the '14+ and it seams even easier than my '03 without the crank to pin and extra fuel pump/injectors. It all depends on your mechanical aptitude too I guess.

I believe GM now pins the cranks on their motors from the factory, but I can't find where I read that. I just know the install doesn't mention it anymore

I have never seen a 6.2 with 308s. Maybe you drove 2 5.3s.

No such thing as a 3.08 geared 6.2. Worst rear ratio they get is like mine with 3.23 and the 8 speed.

From what i understand the 323 8spd is better than the 342 6spd.

Define better lol. 3.73 and the 8 speed would be great... 4.10 would be even better. The 8 speed is just better at having more ratios to play with which is what I like about it.... but that says nothing about the fixed gear in the rear diff. In reality it just makes up for the lack of mechanical advantage out back. I don't mind 3.23 at all but honestly the low rpm is sort of useless... it gets about the same mileage running closer to 2000 rpm at the same given speed that it turns 1500 rpm or so in 8th.

Why not just get a used V8 Camaro or Corvette that you can tinker with....I left a 2006 z06 corvette and 2011 MS3 and went to 5.3 15 Silverado LT Z71 for more practical purposes. The Truck still a lot of weight to throw around corners, even though you get the straight-line rush.

Because for me... cars are completely useless garbage. Sweet... some rough riding thing I can throw through broken frost heaved pavement with a 60 mph speed limit less than 6 months of the year.... And what corners lol.... I dont drive to work or even on my days off on a road course.... but i do like power that sets you back. No thanks. Results will vary lol.

    • Not sure about DFM tech but i know there's a stop/start deactivation button. 
    • I could be interested if they axed cylinder deactivation and at least have a button for stop start. I’m sure the HP numbers will be higher. I would want a longer warranty to help build confidence. I’m a less is more guy as I get older. A V-8 work truck model would be my choice. I know a few outfitters for custom additions I prefer. 
    • It's official. GMC pulled the covers off the next-gen 2027 Sierra 1500, and we got the first official look.     • My overnight hospital stay turned into five.  I developed a post operative fever and an erratic  heart rate.  A blood clot in the lungs was the culprit.  This is apparently a common post surgical complication and easily remedied.   I was the youngest in a four bed ward and a Doctor with a Geriatric specialization was in charge of my care.  All of the nurses were good and some were outstanding at dealing with old people.  It was very evident that my age triggered a different level of care!  My advice to any senior going for a hospital stay is to have a trusted family member advocate visible.  If not, you will still be well cared for, but you may discover that your voice  isn't as strong as it once was!
