Which 275/60r20 tire?

I have had my 2015 GMC 1500 SLT 5.3 4x4 for about a year now. Recently I decided to do some mods beyond the spray in bed liner, LED bulbs and window tint I did right after buying the truck. The first major mod I did was getting the headlights rebuilt with FRS 3.0 HID projectors and adding the Morimoto XB fog lights. Today I ordered the Icon stage 2 suspension kit to both level out my truck and hopefully soften the ride of the factory Z71 suspension just a bit. The kit will go on in about 3 weeks when all the parts arrive.

Now I'm looking at tires. I have read through some of the treads here and have come to the conclusion that I want to go with the 275/60r20 size on my factory 20s to help minimize the negative performance affects of larger tires. I have a long commute so I will be racking up a lot of highway miles. My truck goes off-road just a few times each year for hunting and camping trips so ultimate off-road performance is not as big a deal as good on-road manners. Also, my most recent previous trucks were diesels (Ford 6.7) and the Ford 3.5 Ecoboost so I already feel like the 5.3 is a little sluggish. Finally, I like the look of the factory wheels so I do not plan to swap those for something lighter or of different size.

Here are my questions. Which AT tire will give me a good look and a good highway ride without adding a ton of weight? I have looked at the Nitto Terra Grapplers as they come in a P rated tire which is a little lighter than a LT tire. I have also looked at the BFG AT2s, but those are only available as a LT tire and are heavier. Will the added weight of an LT tire be noticeable? I wouldn't mind the added puncture resistance of the LT tire if it won't kill my on-road performance and ride.

I appreciate any insight that can be provided.

In before everyone suggests the KO2...

Cooper AT3 is a great choice, as is Hankook ATM.

Tyler

Its the "IN" tire to get. Lol

We put them on my girls truck brfore it was cool. Lol

I likw the nitto G2s as well... But the Ko2s get my vote.

In your experience, was the added weight of the BFG AT Ko2s noticeable?

Little bit.... She reported a drop in mpg bur nothing about the truck being overly sluggish.... She has 3.42 ears and no mods what so ever.

I have cooper at3 and like them . I also had firestone AT before. They were both quite on the highway, I would say the firestone was a little bit quitter. AT3 has a little bit more aggressive tread so it was little bit better off road. If I was doing mostly highway I would go with the Firestone AT. But both great chooses for me anyway.

Bfg ko2. Have 50,000+ miles think i will get 25,000 more out of them.. they've been great for me. Im sure the others are good as well.. 95% of my driving is highway as well at 70 mph still can get 19 mpg

I have the same gears on my truck.

I really like the look of the BFGs and the lower MPGs aren't a huge deal. I just don't want my truck to feel a lot slower once I'm done because I both increased the tire diameter and the tire weight.

I will research all the recommended tires. I appreciate all the responses.

To be fair my girl upgraded at just over 4K miles on her truck so she didnt notice it sluggish at all. Her truck feels like it has more getup and go then mine but im running 33s on 3.08 gears.

I've had Cooper ATP (Lots of problems - took 7 tires to get 4 good ones and then the 4th good one after on my truck for a month had bad side to side wobble, visible on the machine)

Currently have Nitto Terra Grappler G2 in a larger size and like them.

Had 275-60-20 Toyo Open Country ATII (this one gets my vote)

The BFG KO2's look the best IMO but the 275-60-20 is a D load tire weighing 57# I believe and the Toyo is a P metric tire coming in at 43lbs for the same size.

    • Missing pieces of the Assembly   Detergency vs Solvency   Not the same thing. Detergency is the mechanism that surrounds solid particulates preventing amalgamation. Usually accompanied by a Dispersant whose job it is to keep those encapsulated particles in Suspension. Solvency keeps things that can be dissolved in solution.    Salt is a solid that can be dissolved. Pepper is a solid that cannot be dissolved. A detergent/dispersant is effective on pepper but a solvent is more effective on salt. As long as the solids remain in either state, dissolved or dispersed then they can be be removed with the oil upon change.    How many wranglers does it take to herd cats? Depends on how many cats your herding. How much sponge does it take to soak up water? How much water is there to soak up? Point is most oil blends start with some herding ability and next to zero sponge and recently even fewer wranglers are being sent to do the same job.    So you start with a dozen cowboys and zero cows but at the drive progresses you pick up cows along the way, but not cowboys. At some point you have more cows that the wranglers can handle and some leave the herd. Deposits. And the API has an acceptable number of cows they are willing to let loose. In the ideal world zero is the right number for he rancher but to the butcher....a few lost is fine. This cow is beat to death. Let's move on....   Solvency isn't something oils on the Walmart shelf care about AT ALL. Problem is, you motor does. Fuels driven varnish sticks rings and only a solvent can keep them in check. The bet is that the solids driven portion that plug the expander rings and the oil drain backs and VVT screens and AFM screens will be an issue long before varnish is. Not that it wont be but if they market well enough the consumer can be kept ignorant enough to either believe it is "normal" (A quart in 1 or 2K is normal) OR is kept at bay longer than the first owner is likely to hang on to the unit. Solvency cost money.    Now the OEM's have John Q. Public buffaloed into the belief that the number cows accumulated along the trail is a known and predictable CONSTANT. It isn't. Nor is the rate at which they crossed paths with them. Only the number of wrangles is constant. Or was. Each new generation of oil sees fewer and fewer of them.    So what happens when the number of cowboys is lower (lower TBN) with each seasons trail but the trial is longer (OCI) and the number of cows along that trail continues increase? (Conditions that promote deposits).    For awhile the blenders were on to something. Better bases are harder to degrade (fewer cows) but that was overtaken by a longer trail (OCI) and improved breeding (More cows) while continuing to reduce the cowboy staffing levels (TBN/Aniline #).    Marketing has been successful. We've fired most of the staff, cows breed line bunnies, the trail is ten times longer and we've convinced the boss his ranch is in better shape that it ever was.    That kids is just the cleaning side. The side few pay attention to.
