2014 Sierra 5.3L HORRIBLE MPG...HELP!

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Just bought a 2014 Sierra 5.3L w/ 24,000 Miles on it.

When I went to buy it the MPG said 12.3....I contributed that to the previous owner having a lead foot.

So I reset the meter. I have put about 50 miles on the truck so far....I'm averaging 13.5mpg...Not anywhere close to what I was expecting..

It does have aftermarket tires on it from the dealership but that's it...I mean, I was expecting 17+ MPG!

I'm really concerned about this since I do a lot of driving for work. I'm considering going back to the dealership tomorrow and demanding my 2013 Silverado back..

Any suggestions? I'm freaking out over here..

What kind/size of tires? Lift or level kit? In town only highway only or mixed driving? Lots of variables.

Winter gas too, where do you live? I only get in the 13's during winter now, and 15's in the summer, local in town/city driving. And it gets 20 to 21 mpgs on an all highway trip during the summer.

So you put all of 50 miles on the truck and your mad at the MPG? Seriously, 50 miles does NOT accurately measure the true MPG. Drive it some more.

Haha thanks guys. I know I understand 50 miles isn't a lot. It was just worrying me since that's what it's showing + the previous owner was getting 12.3!

Anyways no leveling kit, although I do have one getting shipped in.

No Tonneau, also getting shipped in.

Tires were all just at 35psi so I just ran to the gas station and put them all up to 40psi. The tires are Fusion Tourning 275/55/R20.

It was all city driving and I live in western, PA so...hilly....

Maybe I just jumped the gun?

I'd keep stock size tires at 35. I'm running my 10 ply all terrain tires at 40. All city driving, then what you're seeing is normal.

Alright. Well I appreciate the input. I'll play with the PSI...drive it A LOT more and see where I end up..

Mpg is dramatically changed by behavior in these new trucks. Drive it easy with a really steady foot while holding speed. Let the computer do the rest and it will get good mpg. Stop thinking aboit it and drive like you always have.....aaaaand you get the mpg you always have. Take your foot off and on the go pedal like my wife and down the mpg goes. It's sucks but at least the option is there to learn how to get the good mph out of it.

What mpgs did your old Silverado get in the same driving conditions?

Started another thread on this about 1 month ago after being alarmed that my 2002 got similar #s to my new 2015 concerning city driving. I have tracked all fill ups with fuelly.com. So far I'm getting similar #s off the truck and on-star diagnostics so I believe the systems monitoring are close to accurate. post-153795-0-87837100-1456105246_thumb.png

Calculate it by hand. If your truck idles a lot it will through the computer way off. I probably average 16 mpg.

I was concerned about my mpg when I first bought my truck too.

These trucks don't get great mileage if all you do is short trips. Once the engine warms up mileage increases dramatically. Try driving 50 miles in one shot a see what your average is.

Well my 2013 was getting 15.3 and that was over 50k miles. I bought this expecting a few mpg higher so we'll see what happens.

I drive probably 50/50 city to highway. Haven't driven any highway yet. I'm going to really watch how I'm driving to get a higher average.
