I had my oil changed about a month or so ago and on my info screen, I'm still at 70% oil life left. I have not once seen any oil leak or oil on pavement or anything else. I can't imagine I'm burning much oil here in Houston, but maybe I am.

 

Has anyone else experienced something along these lines?

I'd be interested to know how much oil they put in at your last oil change. I'm sure you burn a small amount, and if they filled it to just over the "Low Oil Light", it would go off pretty soon. Did you check the oil level after the oil change?

So, I will admit I am a little confused by your question. Oil Life Monitor (info screen) at 70% has nothing to do with losing oil. OLM uses a formula based on miles and engine operation. If OLM is at 70%, then you most likely put some miles on in the last month or it wasn't reset at the last oil change. Now, if your dipstick is reading low (which it should be if you got an Oil Level Low warning), then I would wonder if it was filled properly at the last oil change or if you are burning oil/leaking it somewhere. I have read where some shops (including dealer techs) think these new V8 motors hold the same as previous generations and they put 6 quarts instead of 8. I hope this helps?

that indicates when to change the

engine oil and filter. This is based

on a combination of factors which

include engine revolutions, engine

temperature, and miles driven.

Based on driving conditions, the

mileage at which an oil change is

indicated can vary considerably. For

the oil life system to work properly,

the system must be reset every time

the oil is changed.

I used to check the level after an oil change but I've been going to the same place for years and never had a problem. I will probably check after work and see what it looks like.

I see how that could be confusing. My reasoning for saying the oil life is at 70% is just me saying I didn't have the oil changed that long ago. I know it has nothing to do with level, but I figured since it hasn't been too long it must've burned a lot of oil, has a leak, or just wasn't filled properly. I drive about 30K a year so I've been doing some driving lol.

 

All in all I was just curious if anyone else had a low oil level warning not long after an oil change. I will check when I get home and if I find its low, I should be able to have the shop top it off.

Gotcha...not had this issue. But I have read where others have experienced the tech not filling it properly. When the dealer did my "free" changes, I checked the dipstick immediately after I got back home. They were spot on. Now, I give the oil change shop (that I have been using for many years to do my annual inspection and oil changes on all my cars) the exact 8 quarts of M1 needed and the filter. Again, I check it each time as soon as I get home. I've gone 3,000 miles and mine still reads full. Another thought...I do have AFM turned off and have for some time.

Truck is used 30,000 miles per year.

 

Oil changed a 'month or so ago'. Lets go with 6 weeks , so a month and a half.

 

30000/12 = 2500 miles per month.

 

Month and a 1/2 means 3750 miles.

 

If 30% oil life = 3750 miles, then when it suggests oil change at 100%, it will

have 3750/30 x100 = 12,500 miles.

 

 

How many miles were you hoping it would go before the oil needed to be changed?

 

(if the last change was a month ago, the 30000/12=2500 miles; 2500/30 x100 = 8300 miles per oil change)

You guys need to read before posting. Yes they reset the OLM during my last oil change and yes I am aware the oil level has nothing to do with the OLM. And yes Redwngr, I drive appx 30k a year, but I go between 5000-7500K between oil changes, so your formula has no weight on the situation. Some days I drive down the street and some days I'm all over the city. Skipping ahead, the reason I brought up the OLM is since it is at 70%, it hasn't been a long period of time since I got the oil changed. If it were at, lets say 30%, a good amount of time and mileage would've gone by from the time I got it changed. That being said, if my truck were to be burning oil or leaking oil and the service techs filled up my truck correctly, that seems like it would be a good amount of oil lost. Chances are they just came up short on the amount of oil they put in and it triggered the sensor. I was just curious if this had happened to anyone else.

 

After checking my oil last night while it was warm and again this morning when it was cold, it was well within the Min/Max fill range. I was triggered with the message twice over the weekend and once yesterday, but have seen nothing today. That is what sparked this whole conversation.

I wonder if your oil level indicator is malfunctioning/bad. I haven't heard of that before, but anything is possible.

30% of the oil life has been used in about 2500 or so miles -- seems to match up with what others find.

 

Again, it's not a measurement of the oil level.

I'm having to do oil consumption tests as my 2014 was giving me a low oil light only 2,000 miles after the oil change. I'm not sure if 6qt or 8qt were added which could be the issue, but if not I'll get back to this post. My truck only has 26,000 miles on it so obviously it should not be burning oil. However, GM has said that the direct injection motors will burn up to I believe 1qt every 3,000 miles naturally?

Also There was a recall on an oil cooler line a while back, but I've already had this checked.

 

I've also disabled my afm with a range device so that nothing gums up while I still keep my warranty. I have the 5.3L V8 ecotec.

Mine came on took it to the dealer and it was 2 quarts low and the dealer change the oil last

I did a search and this did not come up, so i started my own thread about this.

 

Having the same issues and dealer did my last oil change, found out that there was not enough oil in there to reach the dipstick.

 

As for the reasoning, I am going in there today to figure that out

 

Just wanted to say i have the same issue with sadly no resolution at this point

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
