Fixing paint scratches myself?

Recommended Posts

Somehow after 3 months of ownership I found some pretty big scratches on my truck. Very upset. I went to the dealer and ordered paint. It's deep ocean blue metallic. Told me it would come in a spray can. Should I do this myself? Or will it be a major screw up?

I've used this kit in the past and works pretty good considering it's a DIY deal.....

If you're happy with just getting it covered up to prevent rust and it looking decent (but not perfect). You can also make it look even better if you buff / wax the are afterwards.

If you had to ask if you would screw it up, then likely you didn't have enough skills to do it. Metallic is one of the most difficult paint to match; leave it to the professionals for a job like this.

I would say find a paint correction specialist in your area (even close by metropolitan areas) and have the damages assessed. Likely the damages can be reduced so they don't stand out.

What are the causes of those scratches?

Honesty id even say you could wet sand it or take it to be wet sanded. It's pretty cheap

IMO

Any vehicle owner who wants to keep their paint in tip top shape and repair minor scratches (as long as the scratch is in the clear coat) this is a must. Way better finish (wax, polish) than by hand and great scratch removing tool with proper pads and chemicals.

Porter Cable 7424XP http://www.amazon.com/PORTER-CABLE-7424XP-6-Inch-Variable-Speed-Polisher/dp/B002654I46/ref=sr_1_1/189-8345653-5181215?ie=UTF8&qid=1457707150&sr=8-1&keywords=porter+cable+7424xp+polisher

For scratches I use swirl remover which has a fine grit polishing compound in it and a medium pad. Always wet pads with a little water using a spray bottle before use. Take your time using slow to medium speed on the polisher and start with light pressure, adjust speed and pressure as necessary to remove scratch. DO NOT BURN PAINT!

Follow with wax, polish, and fine pad.

Good advice for a new truck let a pro fix it, but for small things i have got paint for small touch ups for years from https://www.automotivetouchup.com/. You enter your paint code they send it to you either small bottle with applicator, pen type applicator etc. Just another option for you.

I have no idea what the causes were. I suspect from cinders PennDot spread during our big snow storm.

If you can catch a finger nail on it it most likely won't polish out. No way I would take a spray can to it. The touch up pens can go either way but I've seen guys do really well with them.
