Do you really need the entire Cat back exhaust?

I was wondering if the entire exhaust pipes from the cat back are really necessary or could a guy just install the muffler (ie. Flowmaster, Borla, etc.) for the same effect? My exhaust only has 50k miles on it and should still be in good shape....Was just curious if it really made much difference. thanks!!

It's a matter of do you want to have cut and welded in a muffler and maybe an adapter piece for cheap and hope you find a shop that does good work and it the welds might rot out in a few years if you live in a salt state? Or do you want a nice stainless, your choice of exit, fit and clamp together system? Me I've done cat back on the last three. The one before that I had a muffler welded in and screwed myself. $350 for the work plus $150 for the muffler. I spent the same for a JBA cat back on the next truck.

So it's really the look rather than a performance issue....I like where the exhaust exit currently and would have gone with a single exhaust anyhow. I'm sure I can find a exhaust shop to do a good job on just replacing the muffler for under $125 rather than spend $600+ for a complete kit. thanks!!

Sooo....I was bored and ran over to my local Midas Muffler shop to see what they would charge to just replace my current muffler with a Flowmaster or Magnaflow...They wanted $350 for the muffler and $185. for labor!!! bahaahah!!! Jesse James used a gun!!!! No freakin way!! I knew I should have stayed as a mechanic, they want to get paid!!! WOW!! LOL

I found another garage that will install a Flowmaster for $120.....wow!! big price difference, but now I'm researching doin the muffler delete.....LOL

I've done three cat back systems on three different trucks. The truck that I have now is the first one I have done where I had the shop just cut off the muffler, weld in a new one, and add new pipe from there out behind the rear wheel of the truck with a tip. I will never do it any different then this again, It sounds just as good as a cat back. Now I have headers, but my brother has the same exact setup with manifolds and it sounds good too.

 

I think I paid $55 for the muffler, $30 for the tip, and $60 for the new pipe, and labor. Dirt cheap, and sounds great. Virtually no drone either.

Thanks...good to know!! The mechanic also said he'd do it for $80 but it wouldn't be a Flowmaster, but one with the same "guts", he says you are just payin the extra $40 for the name on the Flowmaster.........

The shop I use said the same. I bought a Cherry Bomb Pro for mine. My brother bought the same for his Sierra, and a friend bought the same for his Avalanche. Sounds great.

I had a shop do my exhaust; I wasn't paying $1000 for a freaking cat back exhaust. It cost me $450 (I think, have to look for my thread again) to get a Borla ProXS muffler, and dual out the rear 18" long rolled tips. I went aluminized (didn't care to spend coin on SS, I'll just replace it in 4 years).

 

Overall I feel much more satisfied over spending $1k. Though some people on here think it's funny I didn't buy SS piping and instead went aluminized. I forget everyone else, but me, tells me how to spend my money.

 

Check out Borla ProXS, it's NICE. I like the sound far more than Flowmaster. My dad had one on his 14 Silverado.

My brother has the GMPP (Borla) muffler only installed and it's been great for years. He couldn't afford the entire system so he ordered the muffler only through the Borla website. Sounds identical to the same truck with complete cat-back system.

Have you noticed any power/low end torque loss from the setup? I tow a horse trailer and can't afford to loose low end torque and won't be adding a custom tune for a while (when I can afford it). Also does anyone have experience swapping out the muffler but leaving everything else stock, or possibly deleting the resonator as well, and how loud/intense the sound would be under load while towing?

I had a shop remove everything from the muffler on back. Had them out in a single in/dual out Flowmaster Super 44 and black chrome tips at 45° behind each rear tire. Parts and labor was roughly $350 so a fraction of the price and I got exactly instead of settling for what a kit has. The only downfall is that it of course has the V4 drone, but too me it sounds like an engine brake from a commercial truck so it doesn't bother me. Plus I can always have AFM deactivated in the future.

I did not feel any loss. I have a Z71 with 3.42 gears and E range KO2 tires in 33".

 

It was worth the money. I don't regret it!
