Should I do it?

I currently own a '15 2500 and love it. Can't remember why I initially went up to the 2500 in 2008 but I kept trading for the same model! Anyway, I've recently been considering trading this one for '16 but in the 1/2 ton.

I haul horses but not on a regular basis. I have a 3-horse trailer but usually haul one horse so I'd be fine weight-wise, technically. I like to ALWAYS have more power than necessary considering I'm pulling live cargo.

My dealer is trying to sell me on a 1/2 ton with a 5.3 engine---I'm thinking, no.

So, my questions are:

1) will I regret going to a 3/4 to the 1/2 after having driven the 3/4 for so many years or will it be no huge difference, really.

2) get the 6.2? I think this is a no brainer, really.

3) will I feel the pull when trailering .. let's say approx. 9000 lbs.

1) If you had a duramax before it will be a big difference when towing.

2) If the 6.2l is in your price range then I would definitely do it. The 5.3 is a great engine. The 6.2 is just a bigger, better version.

3) If you're towing 9000lbs with a half ton you really need the max tow package to up your tow rating from 9200 lbs to 11,800 lbs if you get a crew 4x4. So yes you'll feel the pull, but the 6.2l with max tow can pull it no problem as long as you don't go over on your payload capacity. Also brakes on the trailer are a must preferably on both axles, but I'd say you already have those.

Yes, I'd definitely get the max tow, brakes on the trailer (and I might trade it for a slightly lighter one, too, we'll see, hard to find). I prefer to tow closer to home as well, so . . .seem to be doing less of it. Although, I have a trip booked for August that involves distance and a lot of hills .

Nothing wrong with the '15 (other than squeaky brakes that no one seems able to fix) but awesome trade in deals right now with the US dollar stuff and looking to lower my monthly payments, haha! Price wouldn't actually drop that much, though . . .I may not do this at all, it was just a thought and now my dealer is sending me pricing, so . ..

ehhh idk 9000 is on the threshold. a 2500 would handle the tongue weight better even tho both are going to have the power to pull.

If you're going to be towing 9000 lbs regularly, a 2500 is the clear choice IMO.

If you love your 15 2500 then why in the world would you trade it in on a 16 model half ton???

If the 15 is a Dmax, you will miss the exhaust brake when towing with the 1/2 ton.

^{I have a tendency to trade every couple of years (not very cost effective, I know) and was thinking I might try to be a little more conservative this time around with payments and licensing fees, etc. However, the pricing I'm getting isn't much different then it is for a 2500 . .so, I'll likely stick with my '15 at this point.}

Don't do it. Part of the reason payments are a concern is you trade in every few years. Keep what you have, pay it off and enjoy. You will buy the 16, enjoy it for a bit then next year you will start a thread stating somewhere along the lines of you regret your decision, or the truck is not enough anymore and you are pulling further again, ect... Your current truck has plenty to do what you need, the new truck will be pushing it.

 

Buying another new truck just to lower your payments is not very good financial advise. If you want to lower your payments buying something cheaper and used.

Assuming that you have a 2015 Duramax, there's no way I'd go to a 2016 1/2 ton. It'll be luck of the draw on your transmission shifting characteristics on the new truck, and you'll have to deal with active fuel management. You won't like the driveability of the '16 versus your '15.
