Hood protection/bug shield

Anyone using a bug shield on new 2016 Silverado 1500? I got one installed at dealer today and they used clips to mount onto hood but the screws can be seen from the outside? The protector looks good but don't care for the screws showing on the outside. Anyone have a different one without the outside mourning screws showing a17f3717b8645ce745b19e6f7c9479f0.jpg9dfaf0909e97c32f410a286215b7cb25.jpg

I don't know about the '16, but I have a Stampede on my '14 and all it uses is existing holes for the weatherstrip at the top of the hood. Just take out certain ones, hold the shield up there and replace the stock plastic clips with longer ones that comes with it. Literally took 5 minutes with 0 drilling or tape. The Stampede could be mounted different on a '16 though so I'm not sure.

Even the metal one I had on my '98 used screws but they were all under the hood like the Stampede so you didn't see them unless you popped the hood.

That's dumb. Did they do it right? Take a pic of under the hood under the front edge.

Mine uses existing holes, underneath the hood. If you open your hood there is a thin rubber gasket along the front of the hood. Mine uses some of those screws to hold it in place.

OEM ones on the Avalanches had the external screws attached to brackets under the hood, but the screw heads were on the flat portion that extended under the hood and were not visible when the hood was closed.

My Traverse OEM uses a similar arrangement to the setup on the Silverado using some attachment points used for the rubber seal, and the lip and screw heads mount under the rubber air seal so they are not visible.....exposed screw heads in the photo look like the deflector was mounted over the rubber seal.

I was very disappointed -- the service advisor basically said that's how they come and it was all he had in stock. I call bullshit -- I'm going out of town for a couple of days, but when returning going to make sure this is made right. It's a brand new truck not even three days old!! They didn't even place protective bumpers on the hood stating they were not needed. When I question him about the bumpers he stared unless going $130 no way would the bug shield hit the paint. I almost think I need to find another dealer and have another service advisor take a look

I would think non exposed screw heads are what's intended especially on a newer model

I would not accept that. If that is what they consider a good install they are a bad service provider lol. I'd be asking for a new hood and proper install, maybe get opinions from other dealers also as back up, and call a GM rep if it gets to that stage.

What the OP needs to do is get a copy of the installation instructions which includes the parts list to compare against what and how it was installed.

Installer likely discarded the instructions, if they were even used, but the dealer has all option installation instructions available on software and can provide a printout upon request. In fact many accessories, sports bar, spoiler, LCD remote with extended antenna, etc. do not come with instructions, but a sheet referring the customer/installer to obtain them from the dealer. Whether the dealer will provide them is another matter......my dealer is happy to provide the installation instructions even before the part is ordered so I can see if it is something that is worth my time and ability to tackle and/or if the install will require reprogramming.

Unfortunately, this may be a "shoot the messenger" situation and not the install, but the crappy way it is designed. Appears to be the AVS shield for the Silverado with installation shown on Youtube:

The design uses not only double sided tape stuck on the top surface of the hood, but exposed screw clips that secure onto the edge of the hood with an exposed screw head. Even give you a small piece of clear tape to protect the hood surface from the clip which should last through at least one car wash.....no way to know what all the trapped dirt behind the deflector and tape will do over the years.

Sometimes OEM is not the best. The POS OEM for the Traverse/Acadia mfrd. for GM by Lund mounted to the top surface of the hood using double sided tape....the only thing I want touching the top surface of the hood is wax....returned it and bought a Weathertech which installed into existing holes under the hood with no exposed screws of fasteners..

I used the AVS Aeroskin, which is an adhesive mount directly onto the hood.

No drilling, no use of any holes, which removes any future issues.

Bug shields look out of style IMO, but this set up offers paint protection without the dated look.

I put a Stampede on the last truck and going to put it on the new one as well.

It has screw clips as well but they are out of site.

If you need any accessories, would love to help. We have couple of toys for you at www.eTruckGear.com and offer honest service ( with 100 % positive Amazon feedback we try hard to be there for the customer)

Stop by and take a look. Tonno Pro is a nice brand to look at. Not that well known but super quality and low price. We are also Weathertech approved, meaning warranty applies as opposed to purchases on Amazon. We have AVS, Husky or Maxliner. Amp Research, Thule, Warn, Rhino Rack. Will be glad to help.

I put the AVS bug deflector on my brand new 2015 about 1 year ago. Install was rather easy but.....

The "Bump stops" fell off at about the 6 month mark.

Adhesive that holds deflector down doesn't/didn't make full contact with leading edge of hood because contour of deflector is wider than the Chevy hood contour.
This lead to dirt and debris getting between tape and hood leading edge,

Clips, that go on end, don't stay in place because the spring tension is not enough to hold edges to leading edge because deflector angle is too wide for hood. Again, adhesive not strong enough to over come wider arc of deflector.

Lexan CRACKED and spider webbed by mounting holes due to poor fit requiring black duct tape to prevent spreading of cracks.

Finally, due to poor fitment from areas mentioned above, the deflector whistles at highway speed of about 72-75 ++ thus an annoying reminder of this poor quality add on what was a quiet truck at speed....

Overall, this product is poorly thought out and executed and an overall POS.....

Don't bother.

I have a EGR bug shield on my 2016 GMC Sierra. I had a bug shield on my Avalanche for 15 years so I at least wanted to try a bug shield on the GMC to see if I would like it, I simply felt I'd rather have it, than not have after 15 years of prior use. So far, I've very happy with the EGR bug shield but the instructions I received were not complete for my vehicle and I could not find specific vehicle information online to help with a correct install. One call to EGR and they responded quickly and emailed photo's of how they intended the bug shield to be installed, it wasn't exactly as I envisioned it and EGR did say the GMC trucks are the most difficult install and not as difficult on the Chevrolet trucks. I'm not sure if I still have the photo's but I might and I'd have to look to be sure.

In regards to AVS, they are almost equal to WeatherTech products in my mind, they spend more on advertising instead of manufacturing quality products and keeping a close eye on quality control. I first purchased a AVS bug shield with matching AVS vent visors. Once the shipment arrived, all of the products were received in poor condition, every item was dinged or scratched while still in the factory packaging. I didn't even bother opening the bug shield, it was unacceptable and was shipped back immediately. I decided to give the AVS vent visors a try, they were scratched up too with one front logo almost totally missing from being rubbed off. After install, the fronts looked okay but the rear vent visors concaved right away. I jammed some stiff foam rubber underneath both sides and let the vehicle sit in the hot sun untouched for 5 days while we took a little trip. Upon our return, I removed the foam rubber and the vent visors immediately concaved and enough so that the rear windows would not close without rubbing them, so those were returned and EGR vent visors where purchased and have preformed perfectly so far.
