Steering wheel not centered - alignment issue?

Is anyone else's steering wheel not perfectly centered? When driving it doesn't pull, but to go straight the steering wheel is about .5" offset. It's been like this since day one and I never thought much of it.

I read a professional review of the '16 Sierra and the reviewer made note of the steering wheel pointed at his right nipple. I didn't quote because that's not perfectly accurate but it's pretty close.

 

I need to pay attention. I keep forgetting to make note of that.

It should be an easy correction. All they need to do is center the steering wheel and reset the toe in setting on the front wheels. But it does require use of an alignment machine.

The electric steering in these things adjusts for road crown. So it could in theory go slightly out by design.

I had hell getting a dealership to get mine to drive straight with a properly centered wheel. I'd get "its within spec, must be road crown", where the printout would show positive toe on one side, and negative toe on the left. Surprise, it drifted, even on a runway with very little crown that I have access to. Finally got a dealership to set camber, caster and toe equally, and then actually do that on a centered the steering wheel. Now it doesn't pull, I don't have to apply wheel pressure unless the crown is heavy, and the steering wheel is centered. The steering angle page on the instrument panel does show 38degrees one direction and 41 the other lock to lock, but I can live with that.

 

So having a straight wheel on a straight tracking truck can be done, it's just not part of factory "Precision" as GMC likes to claim.

The steering wheel on all 1500's CHEVY/GMC are offset meaning not centered and they are canted 1/2" with the opening of vehicle door side canted towards the dash and the ignition side towards you.

 

It's for ease of getting into and out of vehicle.
