Upper Control Arm Recall

Looks like GM has dropped their forged Aluminum upper control arm manufacturer in feb 2016 and their forged steel manufacturer in March 2016 All trucks and SUVs built after March 2016 apparently have a stamped and welded lighter weight and cheaper upper control arm installed? They have about 4800 recalled for bad welds. It sure makes you wonder how strong the new design is going to be. Anyone with a post April 2016 or later build truck care to take some closeup pics and post? Mine has a January 2016 build date and has the forged steel control arms. Here are some pics.

Have they found a better manufacturer? Hopefully release a bulletin for this?

Trucks with AVV in their build label are 2016.5. They have the stamped steel control arms. Trucks without AVV that are 2016 have the forged arms. 2017 all 1500 trucks get the stamped steel arms. They have used stamped steel in the past remember, so it is nothing new. 1988-1998 trucks had stamped upper and lower arms. 2001-2010 HD trucks had stamped upper arms. 1999+ up have forged lower arms. 42190-01 is the recall # dates back to May 2016. I believe it is a limited number of trucks as those affected were placed on stop delivery at the end of April.

Mine was built in June. It's a week old... should be clean enough for nice photos.

 

 

OTOH... My 05 Denali is very clean underneath as well. ;)

It DOES have stamped arms. And LOTS of cosmoline underneath. Like black buttah everywhere. LOL

Cost cutting? Perhaps...Inferior? Unless you are running the Baja 1000? Most likely not. They've used stamped uppers in the past with no problems.

My upper control arm on my 2016 Sierra has snapped where the balljoint is. Checked to see if my vin# was affected by this issue and it's not. Truck is 3 months old. What should I do? Have it at a random off-road shop to be replaced. Should GMC cover this issue?

This is the arm affected by the recall.

Stamped arms aren't necessarily any weaker than a forged arm and some aftermarket companies do use them frequently. The problem was with the weld quality by the X-axis bushing and was remedied by switching to another vendor that does stamped arms once again(which was GM's original design).

I'm forum illiterate so if someone wants to post that image on here without a link to the ebay auction before it dissapears that wouldn't be a terrible idea.

Sidenote: Don't buy that arm ahahahah...."taken off a lifted truck" More like taken off for a recall and then sold on ebay.

I just went and looked at my truck...pretty sure my 2012 25000hd has cast/forged upper arms? Or am I missing something?

 

On a side note, I saw a new 2500hd (at least the latest model) with what appeared as a failed upper ball joint or control arm sitting alongside the road (top of the front driver's wheel tipped way in). That truck looked pristine, like it was fresh off the lot...

You should take it to the dealer ASAP and have them fix it. You are under warranty.
