2016 LED VS HID

How do the HIds compare to the LEDs? Are the color temps close? Are the HIDS substantially better than the 2014/2015 Halogens that were in the silverados ?

 

I searched and didn't see specific threads about this, if there is I'm sorry I probably just suck at searching lol!

I was just noticing today that the optics in my z71 (hid) are pretty large. I haven't really driven at night yet to judge the cutoff. LED is usually substantially superior (at least in my Audi it is versus the same car with hid)

The hid lights are good. They are hampered by having only a 25w ballast instead of a 35w or 55w ballast, and a d5s bulb. The color on the hid will have a tint of yellow as they have a 4300k temp compared to the led which are in the 5-6000k range. They are substantially better than halogen though. The led lights in the 16 trucks are the best option however they do glare on road signs some (at least mine does) which is normal for most led projectors I've seen. I have no complaints other than the glare with my led lights. My friend's hid lights on his lt are more than adequate as well. Especially when compared to anything halogen.

I really like the headlights on my 16. Only complaint is now I get flashed thinking my high beams are on like I used to get when my 2007 Tundra was new.

Actually, HID will emit more light than LED.

LED over time, will lose intensity.

LED will be the future because they are cheaper to make.

LED project somewhere around 6000k.

HIDs are available in many different temperatures, with 4,300k being the tempurature that emits the most useable light for driving.

 

I prefer 5,500k HID.

The color temps and lumins should be very close. The real difference is HID use more power and burn out more.

 

LED are typically right around:

5000-5500kelvin temp

2500 lumin per bulb

 

If the HID is 'white' in color it is right around that range. At 6000+ the light itself gets a blue tinge and at 9000+ its starts to go purple I have never seen above 12000. Anything over 6k is not road legal. Below 5000k the light is yellowing like halogen and you can get 'bright yellow' HID too.

 

Both HID and LED are far superior to Halogen. I would rate them closely for usage and brightness. LED is just the latest and greatest while HID you can play with the color a bit.

That's what I thought, HID was brighter and won't dim over time which makes me wonder why LED's are considered premium now. It's not like you get the benefit of less power usage either like you do on your utility bill.

well, you don't have to worry about the ac delco ballasts failing.

Actually you do, it is just nothing to write home about.

 

The gasoline-powered vehicle, as a result of its lower fuel efficiency, does not experience the same effect in terms of overall range. However, because of much higher fuel costs (relative to electricity), the effect of the differing electrical loads is felt mostly in overall dollars spent on fuel. These reductions in total fuel costs due to LED lighting resulted in savings between $5 and $17 per year for the conditions modeled in this report. Due to the influence of fuel efficiency (kWh/km) and cost of fuel ($/kWh) on cost per distance ($/km), this effect is approximately constant over the range of fuel efficiencies for gasoline-powered vehicles in the U.S.—10 to 32 mpg (4.2 to 13.5 km/L, or 23.5 to 7.3 L/100 km) (DOE, 2008).

Well it depends on the bulb used. The d5s bulb used is only 2000 lumen at 4200k on a 25w ballast unlike the d2s bulbs which are around 3500 lumen depending on the temp.

I haven't been able to find out the lumen output of the led headlights yet, but they are a 3 chip design they are also much whiter of a light than the d5s.

This is COMPLETELY INACCURATE! These fourms can spew incorrect information like the paparazzi!

 

LED'S LOOSE INTENSITY AT A FRACTION OF TIME COMPARED TO HID!

LED'S COME IN A VARIETY OF KELVIN RANGES ALSO!

I drove a 2016 all Terrain with HID's good but not as impressive as the LED's on my Denali, like the others have said, 25w HID ballast is holding back the HID's, along other things like HID start up and maintenance voltage, HID's need warm up to reach full output. etc... LED's are currently the way to go, laser is next.
