I just bought a 2005 Silverado 4x4 crew cab with a 5.3L engine. I've been reading about the problems with the AFM systems in the 5.3l engine. How do I know if I have the AFM engine?

You don't, non of the GMT800's had AFM.

What you're driving as opposed to GMT900 series that has AFM

GMT800 is the GM platform code for 1999-2007(classic) pickup trucks and SUVs (GMT abbreviating for General Motors Truck). GMT-900 is 2007-2013 (2014 for SUVs) and GMT-400 was 1988-1998 trucks/SUVs.

 

Each type of truck has its own "code" if you will that stem from the base GM chassis code of GMT-800.

 

GMT800/880 are Silverado/Sierra.

 

GMT820 is the short wheelbase SUVs (Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade, Hummer H2)

 

GMT830 is the long wheelbase SUVs (Suburban, Yukon XL, Escalade ESV).

 

GMT805/806 are the Avalanche and Escalade EXT.

 

The only V8 trucks/SUVs that had AFM in the 1999-2006 timeframe was select 2005-2009 GMT-360 platform products, the Trailblazer (and EXT), Envoy (and XL), Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender. Those had the LH6 5.3, that had AFM. That was AFM's debut into GM trucks and the debut of the Gen 4 LS/Vortec engines.

Before  running  on all 8 cylinders  file all shut down  cylinder valve stems  the same  or you  may end up with  a piston through  your  block or more broken  lifters
