Removing Bed

Recommended Posts

I have a 2016 Silverado crew cab short bed, and I live in the northeast so oil undercoating is a must. I want to remove the bed to undercoat for the first time to get better coverage. Was wondering if anyone has removed the bed from the las test body style and if it was like removing the old body style bed, a few bolts and wiring harnesses and gas filler neck etc...

Thanks

I removed mine. You need atleast 4 people. First unscrew the gas filler neck from the bed. Next in the rear disconnect all of the connectors to the distribution block (backup camera, tailights etc.). Next under the truck there are 6 if i remember right bolts. Unscrew make sure everything is disconnected, lift up and make sure the gas filler nexk is disconnected and not in the way. Lay on grass. To install reverse process.

Waste of time, effort and money.

They haven't seen vehicles from Maine, a 4-5 month diet a year of calcium will ruin a vehicle in less than ten years

Up here in CANADA it is the same way.

The FRAMES may be more resistant to corrosion, but all your components (control arms, brakes lines, fuel lines, etc) are no better protected than 20 years ago.

here in CNY they still use salt on the roads and it will wreck any automobile. undercoating is a must here if you care about your daily

Meh I live on the west coast, like you literally cannot get any more west coast of Canada and have zero concerns running with no under body coating. I drive on mountains and beaches and my undercarriage looks well not exactly as new as when I bought it but close enough after 1.5 years and 2 Canadian winters. All those components should be made with rust resistant materials or painted. Nothing is a no rust 100% gaurentee even a underbody coating (they can actually be worse for rust if improperly applied and it starts to crack and trap water) and will do nothing for rust already started.

Paint protection and under body coating is nothing more than a way for the dealership to pad the sale IMO. I would never recommend either, but also would never recommend an extended warranty. 10-20 years ago maybe but never paint protection that was always a scam. If you want nice paint you simply have to care for it there is and never was a magical solution in a bottle that will keep your paint as fresh 10 years from now.

I am personally more worried about my fenders specifically on the box, where I am from every 10+ year old truck i see has their fenders eaten away long before under body issues arise. I also do not mean to discourage anyone especially if you already removed your box just really saying it is not an issue like in the past at all.

Any bit of rust prevention is a plus in my book. Def not a waste of time and money. It all depends on where you live. Here in OH, the salt is pretty bad on vehicles. My 07 was horrible underneath. Rockers were rotted, bed sides above the wheels, rear bumper had to be replaced because of rust. Right before I traded it in a mechanic replaced my rear brake line and said to get rid of it. The frame had rust on it, all the other brake lines, fuel lines and tranny lines were about the size of a finger because they were so puffy. He didn't replace the line all the way to the anti lock brake unit because the lines were so bad. He didn't want to open a can of worms and cost me a ton. I only had it oil sprayed 2 times, and after seeing what happened, my 14 will be sprayed every year.

I see the same thing here in Maine, I use this oil undercoating product

http://nhoilundercoating.com

Doesn't peel the wax off the frame like fluid film, actually bonds to the gm wax costing

Been using fluid film since March with no ill effects. Just touched it up today actually. It doesn't peel the wax coating at all.

That's good, I have seen several 2014's that fluid film ruined the wax coating, maybe it was just a fluke

Made mine peel off in sheets in places...oil undercoated after that and have been fine...

haha I wish you were right. My whole frame is rusting - this is an extremely common problem with the silverados and their sister vehicles.
