I am looking for suggestions on a tonneau cover for my truck so I can haul things in the back without getting them wet or nasty in the winter. Here is my criteria

1. Watertight

2. Easy to remove cover from truck if needed

3. Durable

4. Avalible for 8ft bed

5. Does not block view in rear window while folded up

6.I am not a fan of the velcro down covers but I will consider valid points made about them.

7.Security is not my upmost consider but I will consider it a added bonus.

American Tonneau Tri-fold

Well made tonneau cover constructed right here in Ann Arbor, MI in the Extang plant. I bought 2 of these for a GMC and an F150. They were $269 each delivered free to the house. Both beds dry as bone. Easy on/off and 10% improved fuel economy.

Enjoy!

I went with the truck covers USA model additional Yakima racks built in for more flexibility. These aren't cheap but they are built very solid and better than they have to be. Should last for years. So far 18 months and going strong.

Check into these:

Leer Trilogy (hard tri-fold)

Extang SolidFold (hard tri-fold)

Extang Trifecta (vinyl tri-fold)

All of them are easily removable and do not leave any rails/drain tubes/etc. on the truck. They all fold flat when open so nothing sticks above the rear window. You can also close your tailgate without lifting up the cover on all of them.

Just had a Retrax pro MX put on my 2500. Looks great. I soaked it with the hose as soon as I got home. A little water at each front corner, nothing bad. A TON of water at each back corner. Now granted, I was intentionally spraying all sides, so probably wouldn't be that bad in the rain. Definitely need to work on sealing up the tailgate though. Also, my long term concern is that there is no arch, or slope to the cover. I had about a gallon of water pooled on top of the cover when I was done. Ok while each slat seals perfectly against the next, but I fear, years down the road, that could be a big problem. At this point, I'd call it 90% water tight.

I have had extremely good luck with access roll up covers. They are simple to install, I have never in 13 years of having them on my last 4 trucks needed to remove one except to switch the previous cover between trucks twice. It does use velcro on the sides which I know you said you dont like but all that does is hold the side tension to keep it from wrinkiling side to side. The latch mechanism at the rear holds tension front to back with easy to adjust tensioners located at the front of the bed. I have now installed 6 access covers (2 mine, 4 freind and family) and there have been 0 issues with any of them. They will seep a small amount of water in the corners during heavy rains but it is very minimal. My old truck had an original model that was purchased in 03 and installed on my 01 z71, removed and installed on my 06 dmax in 06, removed and installed on a second 06 dmax in 07 after it lived thru a 50mph head on wreck with a tree and was still in use with no issues when sold in October this year. It was starting to show its age on the velcro here and there but it still gripped just fine to hold the cover tight. My new truck has a lorado on it as well as the other 5 I have installed for freinds and family and no issues with any of those to date either.

Just an update on the Retrax Pro MX. After the first rainstorm, my bed is soaked. Leaked all the way down both sides, a little bit at each front corner, a lot at each back corner, and a few places in the middle of the cover. Definitely not worth $1600. Back to the store on Monday.

    • Curious, did anyone ever get a fix for the vibration reported here.   I have a 2024 Silverado with 6.6 duramax.   I’m noting the same vibration resonating up through the steering shaft into the steering wheel.    Best way to describe- like someone is tapping on the steering shaft/components and it’s resonating into the steering wheel.    thanks.
    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
