Recalls and loaners

Need to bring my truck in for the death trap of a seat belt AND airbag recall combination. Dealer claims the one takes 2 and a half to 3 hours. This is time i cannot wait at the dealer. They also claim that due to me being outside of my bumper to bumper warranty (36k) they cannot offer a loaner. I am at about 38-39k and called in July when i was probably under 36k and they said they didn't have the part. Regardless what does my warranty matter when it's a factory recall? Anyone have any advice on this?

Unfortunately dealers are not required to give you a loaner. Most do since it's good business but GM does not require them to do it even if it's still under warranty. Do they at least have a shuttle service?

they called back and said they'd provide one. Just seems like such a lame business practice to not have a a small fleet of cheap loaners. one of the things i loved about my BMW is that they would give you a loaner for anything and everything.... "hey can you change my wiper blades"... yea take a loaner. lol.

Incorrect, as stated in the GM owners manual. If the repairs are going to keep the vehicle out of use overnight GM is to provide the customer a vehicle to drive, the dealer is supposed to put the customer in another GM vehicle until repairs are completed. Recalls I think also are provided this coverage as well.

The airbag recall though only takes 30 minutes to flash the module.

Dealers on have so many vehicles set aside for loaners, most push towards a rental car company for the vehicles. While the European car companies all brag about a loaner it doesn't always work like that, I took our brand new Audi in for service work and had to wait on it for 4 hours as the dealer only has 3-4 loaners. If you want or need one you have to schedule your service work otherwise you will have to go without a car unless it is going to be overnight, then they will put you into a rental car.

Do you know if this is true for vehicles outside the 36K warranty?

no it is not true. Vehicles outside of the warranty, even for safety recall work- dealers are under no obligation to provide loaners or rentals.

What he said. Courtesy transportation is required only under normal bumper to bumper and powertrain unless specified per the specific campaign.

Try a different dealer... What kinda pissed me off when I had my Sierra, it needed 5 or 6 recalls done, they gave me a freaking stripped down terrain.... I should have been given a suburban because I have a $40k truck with a tonneau, fortunately the work I had to do that day I was able to use the terrain as my payload was small. The dealers don't like to do recalls on Saturday so you're stuck missing work to get them the brand new defective vehicle you're paying a certain amount per day to use, they should at least give you equivalent equipment.

I guess the one thing that irk's me is that I did bring my truck in for my paint issue when it was under 36K, but the dealer wasn't aware of the PIT5313C bulletin, so it didn't get fixed.

Since then I've moved 200 miles away and found the bulletin, but now I'm outside the warranty for a loaner.

At this point I think I'll pay for a rental because I just want it fixed and to be done with the matter.

The manufacture is not required to give you a like vehicle for a like vehicle, they are only required to give you something to drive that gets you from point A to B.

Not correct. In the Owners Manual under "Courtesy Transportation Program" it says:

"To enhance your ownership experience, we and our participating dealers are proud to offer Courtesy Transportation". (so this means the dealer decides whether or not they are "participating".)

It then goes into the next section called "Transportation Options" where it lists shuttle, public transportation, loaners, rentals, etc. In this section it talks about overnight warranty repair and says the dealer may (not "must") provide a vehicle. GM covers themselves in a final disclaimer that says "All program options, such as shuttle service, may not be available at every dealer. Contact your dealer for specific availability."

So like I said before it's good business for them to provide loaner cars but it is NOT required and is up to the individual dealership.

Ive yet to see any dealer, but I guess the wording has changed some in years. It used to be required that they give you a vehicle for over night repairs. Any more I try to work with my dealer. I schedule it to come in, have them look at it. If the vehicle is still driveable then I have then order parts and bring it back in at a later date for the repair. Ive found that working with the dealer goes a long way in them helping you out of you need a vehicle to drive.
