Oil and filter change yourself?

If you plan on keeping your vehicle a long time and changing your own oil, I highly recommend two items to make life more pleasant and your floor/driveway a lot cleaner:

I already have the Fumoto new version valve. I will order the funnel, great idea. Saw a couple of videos about the filter; no mess free way to remove. Did see the cardboard placement angled behind and below so at least the oil flow won't hit the underside parts of the truck.

Is this Fumoto valve the correct one that fits the L83 5.3? I thought there was a two piece design out now?

Installed it; fits great; protected by the crossmember; angle of the drain hole prevents shooting oil all over the floor; much improved!

No washer, it has a rubber gasket on the head. Its a steel pan just snug it. Same on oil filter, hand tight then half a turn, make sure old gasket came off and skim new one with a little oil.

At one point, someone mentioned placing a zip lock bag over the filter after its loosened, but before it's removed...oil runs in the bag with the filter.

I have 8 cars, you made me think, but the corvette has an aluminum pan but the truck was steel. I think. I'm pretty sure. I'm sure? Yeah I will bet I remember correctly, it's steel! LOL I am due to change the oil soon, will confirm!

Besides a big rectangular oil change pan, I also suggest a large metal 2'×4' tray to protect concrete from drips, and to transfer old oil back into 5qt bottles. Mine has saved my driveway many times on windy days...

Everything I buy seems to require some modification; or maybe it's just me.

 

The funnel mentioned above seemed to lay down too much when stuck in the valve cover. I notched it to be easier to pour in oil from the 5 quart jugs without a spill.

 

Still works as intended, only better.

Surprisingly enough, I have found the little Amsoil paper funnels do a pretty darn good job. Whether my Caddy or Pickup or even my small engine equipment. And most of the oil I buy is in gallon jugs. One pack of those Amsoil funnels has 3 funnels, lies flat till you remove one and unfold it. I have a pack in each vehicle in the event I need to add oil on a road trip. At home, I use one till it no longer is viable. On the road, I use one and toss it in the trash.
