Chevy Shake Observation

Long time observer but this is my first time posting. My 2014 Sierra SLT CC has been a really good truck. No vibration issues but I really did not like the Goodyear SRA's. At almost 15,000 miles I replaced them with a set of Michelin Defenders from Costco. The truck rode better but I noticed after a few miles a vibration that started at about 46 mph and went away at about 53 mph. Then on a road trip I felt a vibration at about 75 mph. I took it to the dealer and they did a road force balance and found the new Michelin on the left front was at 27 pounds during the balancing. I went back to Costco and they replaced the tire. Smooth as silk at 80 mph but still a small vibration between 46 and 53 mph. Back to Costco and they rechecked the three that had the road force and said they were ok but they broke the new tire down and rotated it on the rim and rebalanced it and installed it on the right rear. Better but still a slight vibration at 46 to 53 mph. I even tried driving it in manual mode to eliminate the AFM, Thanks to all the good people on this forum I torqued the rear axle U bolts to 59 pound feet of torque plus 130 degrees. Would really like to know what that amounts to. Doing that got rid of 98% of the vibration and the little bit that is left is only noticeable once in a while. I thought about tightening the U bolts a little more.

Also thanks to this forum I now have the remote lock on my tailgate that works with the key fob and also installed the wireless charging pad under the arm rest and it works great. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 but had to switch from the Otter Box case to a Unicorn Beetle so it would fit in the recessed area of the arm rest to work.

Thank you. Good observations.

I'd like to hear your logic on that. Let's see, a driveline is balance by adding weight to it because it spins in a 360 degree fashion. Adding a person into your truck adds a downward force of weight in only one direction. Your driveline would still be spinning more than 270 degrees with an imbalance which would not compensate for the 80% reduction you claim. Same goes for the tire. If imbalanced, it too would wobble on a plane perpendicular to the downward force your wife created by sitting in the truck. That would not affect the imabalnce enough to reduce your perceived vibration. If your theory was true, anytime you rode in an unbalanced vehicle with more passengers or a load on one side versus the other it would vibrate. The logical explanation which you could easily check is to see if your seats arent't bloted down all the way. Another possibility is your suspension bolts arent torqued down, or perhaps you have some lose body mounts.

Never said went away. Was just less. In my mind it makes sense especially if it's a driveshaft issue which needs balancing or tire issues. Added weight of a human being might somewhat balance it out. That's my theory

Hello guys. As some of you may know by my other posts, I have a really bad shaking issue. Drove from Vegas to Cali yesterday and I had to pull over because I thought my rear left tire was lose and about it fall off. Felt like I was sitting ontop of a clothes dryer the entire time.

Here's one observation I've made. When I got to California, I picked up my wife and we drove around for a few hours. While she was a passenger, the vibrations and shaking was reduced about 80%. Interesting note I will have to inform my service man on Saturday when I take it in.

Any thoughts?

Here's a thought........bench seat?.........seat mounts or center console mounts? Try placing someone twice her weight or a fat service advisor in the seat and see if you get a 90% reduction.

Ditto on the 59lb-ft plus 130° = ?

You obviously know more than I do lol.. I'll report back after dealership. That's why I like this place. Learn something new every time.

But I can tell you 100% it's not the seats. The entire truck shakes really bad. There's something definitely wrong. You've seen my video right?

I have. The only thing with the water test is as someone else mentioned in another thread is the concole could vibrate, but the truck not. But you said younfeel tge vibration through the seat. Do you feel it in the steering wheel as well?

Yeah definitely. A small amount on the pedals too.

I had the Goodyear SRA 20's on my Ram and I do remember a near constant "rattle" type shake at interstate speeds(65-70mph). I haven't noticed hardly any shaking at all with my Silverado or Sierra

I got the Bridgestone tires on this one. She's going in Saturday. I'll report back what they say, but I'm not too optimistic about it.

It shouldn't matter if a seat or console is not torqued down or bolted down tightly. If the console, and or seat/s, and or floor, and or steering wheel vibrate, something in the drive train is out of balance.

You have the Dueler A/Ts? That's what my '16 Z71 has. Service manager tried to convince me that the tread on the tires was "aggressive" and the aggressive tread was causing the vibration...really?!? Moment of silence, then not consciously meaning to, I actually grinned at him and chuckled when he said that. Apparently these guys will try anything to make ya just go away.

I have the Bridgestones on my truck and it rides very smoothly. I dislike the tires for traction but they do run fine on a dry highway. You read many hard luck stories about dealership repairs. There are many successful visits to the service department that are not reported in this forum. Go in with the attitude that your issue will be resolved. A shake is not a design feature. In my opinion, these trucks are designed to , and will, ride as smooth as a 70's luxury car!

Yup I got the Bridgestone Dueler. Thanks for the replies gents.. I will definitely keep you guys posted on this. Whether it's a positive or negative outcome.

    • Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young pullets, and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. Fred's favourite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover. To Fred's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. Fred was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the City Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize," but they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention. Vote carefully in the next election, you can't always hear the bells.
    • Can someone confirm if the GM order workbench terminal is able to validate a custom build sequence:   1) Initialize the Allocation Base: Open a new vehicle build queue, select the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD, and pick the High Country (3LZ Preferred Equipment Group).   2) Select the Diesel Powertrain: Go directly to the engine configuration screen and choose RPO code LZ0 (3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel). Ensure it maps to the MHS 10-speed automatic transmission.   3) Deploy the Seating Swap: Navigate to the Interior Options screen and enter RPO code ATT to replace the standard captain's chairs with the power-release 60/40 bench seat. Because you are not trying to force a separate luxury or air-suspension bundle, the standard, premium D07 Fixed Floor Console remains active. The system will accept this change immediately without triggering a warning message.   3)Apply Heavy-Duty Hauling Capability: Input RPO code NHT (Max Trailering Package). The commercial terminal will automatically bundle the required trailering hardware and software modules to support the diesel engine's maximum towing capacity.   5) Layer the Premium Tech and Glass: Separately add code C3U (Panoramic Power Sunroof) and code UKL (Super Cruise) to the order screen.   6) Run the Final Validation: Click the "Validate Order" button at the bottom of the interface.
    • Spent the last hour or 2 googling and reading up on the spacer thing. I don't like the loss of thread contact on the slip on spacers, but it appears you can get "extended" lug nuts that reach into the hole of the wheel to get back the lost threads. Looks like the only true hubcentric slip on spacers are at least .375". I'd want as little as I could get away with and don't want to cause other clearance issues going any thicker. Bora seems to offer what appears to be a well made .375" spacer and extended lug nuts. I searched here and did find a couple threads recommending Bora. But not cheap. By the time I buy spacers and lugs, new TPMS sensors, then pay a tire shop to install the new sensors, I suspect I'm going to be in over $400. Thinking about running out and getting some washers to put behind the wheel to see if .375" is enough to clear calipers, turn lock to lock without rubbing, and to see if the wheels/tires look strange pushed out a little. This would just be to check fitment.
    • Roadmaster makes some quality parts; I have their sway bar. I considered the RAS, but I ended up bagging. I didn't know what kind of ride I'd get with RAS, and the bags have interior jounce bumpers, so I can run 0 pounds pressure. I figured I'd have the best of normal suspension ride with assist on-demand. But it seems you got pretty much the same in one item.
