Silverado Steve Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I have had no major concerning issues with my truck and 46K miles. The overwhelming issues with afm were with the previous gen. Frankly, if you are basing your concerns based on what you read on forums, then all models by all manufacturers should be concerning.

Billy346 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I'll tell you what, if It wasn't for this forum, I wouldn't know anything about "Chevy Shake" or AFM woes. All I knew was that I always wanted a Z71 since I was twelve. I see lots of old Chevys on the road and assumed that the new ones would be just as good as the old ones. I can honestly say that my truck didn't disappoint. It is quiet, smooth, and powerful. I am very happy with the build quality and the look of the truck. To me, the Chevy looks like a combination of the 1970s C/K square body trucks and the mid 1990s GMT400 trucks. In terms of what you read on this forum, you need to take everything with a grain of salt. My last truck was an '08 F150 with the 5.4L V8. I read horror story after horror story about that engine to the point that I thought my truck was a ticking bomb. In reality it was the most reliable truck I had ever owned. It had plenty of power and did everything I needed it to. I kept up with the maintenance and didn't abuse it, and it returned the favor. I traded it in knowing that it had at least another 100,000 miles left in it. I think the same goes for these trucks. That being said, these new GM trucks are very different from the trucks of yore. They are packed with computer technology, sound deadening, noise cancellation, variable valve timing, multi displacement running, and an electronically controlled transmission. The problems that you read about them on this forum are not endemic to Chevrolet. My wife has a Honda Pilot, which has many of the same features, and I read about similar shaking problems and noise problems on the Honda Pilot forum. Keep in mind that we are talking about a Honda here, which has a Sterling reputation for quality and reliability. If Honda is having the same complaints as Chevrolet, then it is most likely not a build quality issue on the part of General Motors. Unfortunately, you won't escape these or similar complaints with other brands. All manufacturers are having to rapidly change their trucks to keep up with demanding EPA fuel efficiency and emissions standards, all while staying competitive in terms of horsepower, torque, towing ability, and reliability. However, based on my experience with the new Silverado, I highly recommend it and I think that if you can understand the difference in technology between these trucks and trucks built ten years ago, many of the complaints that you hear will go in one ear and out the other.
15 Z71 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I saw a video on you tube that was showing the years and thousands of miles these new 5.3 where tested by GM. I would think if they where that bad they would still not be making the same motor since 2014+. Mine is a 15 I have no range device nor do I put it in M5 every time I drive it. That being said,I'm just going to drive it. I have no vibes and mine is smooth and quit.
njk4o5 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 86k on my 2014 high country with no issues. I don't care for the trans though. I liked how my old 2004 Silverado with 202k shifted better lol
Jmpatterson Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I've had 3 2014+ trucks and never had an issue out of any of them. First 2014 I had was a double cab GMC, loved the truck but hated not having room for anyone to sit in the back, so I ended up trading it on a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LTZ Crew Cab. I loved the Silverado but just liked the cosmetic looks of the GMC a lot better. Came across a deal on a 2015 GMC Sierra SLT Crew Cab so I traded in the Chevy and went back to a GMC. Between all 3 I never had any issues out of any of them and put about 15,000 miles on the first two before I traded them in.
BSME1115 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Go with GMC, the windshields are thicker and denser polymers throughout. Thicker windshield and denser polymers??? I don't think so....
deweyg63 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I'm doubting the thicker windshield and polymer post myself. Could be wrong but I had 14 years in a UAW car plant. Anything that can be interchangeable is. It's all about cost savings. Buy a chevy or GM but do take a long test drive. My 15 LTZ 6.2 seemed fine then vibration between 45 and 70 started but only after warming it up for around 8-10 miles. New torque converter and I'm very happy
Donstar Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Have an 01 Ram 1500 and am seriously considering buying a 2014+ Silverado in 4x4 with a V8. They are by far my favorite body style out of the top three (Ford, Dodge Chevy) but I have been reading up on the Silverado 1500 and have herd some concerning things which includes AFM system (motor rebuilds very early in the trucks life). Is chevy having issues with the 2014+ Silverado to the point at which you would recommend that I steer clear of them? The last thing I want to do is spend $30-$35K on a truck that is not going to last or at least be problem free for the next 5-8 years. Info is appreciated! If I was looking for a truck with a budget of $30 - 35 k, I would be looking at yearend new trucks. Chevy or GMC at all trim levels and power combinations are worth a look.

Andy Seibel Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Thicker windshield and denser polymers??? I don't think so.... I'm pretty sure he was joking. If he was serious, some salesman sold him a load of crap.

Chevy or GMC at all trim levels and power combinations are worth a look. Because GM or Chevy have had the extra year or two to fix potential issues that were on the 2014's and 2015's? I thought that if I bought a 2015 truck with 10k-30k miles, the problems with that specific truck would have already presented themselves and the problems would have been fixed because it is under warranty. Is my thinking flawed?

Is my thinking flawed? With a new truck you will have full warranty A used truck could be problem-free or a headache someone has unloaded. I bought a yearend '15 Sierra last year and it is flawless. Look at the '2016's that are still around and you may be pleased with the prices. I think you will be much happier buying new if you are able!
