2014+ Silverado 1500 A Good Choice?

Recommended Posts

Have an 01 Ram 1500 and am seriously considering buying a 2014+ Silverado in 4x4 with a V8. They are by far my favorite body style out of the top three (Ford, Dodge Chevy) but I have been reading up on the Silverado 1500 and have herd some concerning things which includes AFM system (motor rebuilds very early in the trucks life).

Is chevy having issues with the 2014+ Silverado to the point at which you would recommend that I steer clear of them? The last thing I want to do is spend $30-$35K on a truck that is not going to last or at least be problem free for the next 5-8 years.

Info is appreciated!

You are asking this question on a forum full of people who chose GM over all the other options.

Of course you should buy a Chevy. some may tell you horror stories, but you can find those for any make/model. Overall you can't go wrong with Chevy.

some people complain about the AFM and shifting, but honestly I think it runs smooth and quiet and I couldn't be happier. just test drive it first so you know what to expect.

^^^What he said^^^ And be sure to take it for a ride on the highway, run it up to 75-80 mph for about 5 minutes to be sure there are no vibrations. Most are trouble free, some are not...like mine )o:

Be sure you aren't reviewing info for pre 2014 AFM. The 2014's are the same displacement as previous, but they are completely different engines.

Try to go for an extended test drive. See if you can take it for a few days. Make sure it doesn't have the dreaded chevy shake. I wish I would have.

Like everyone else is saying, try to take a nice long test drive. Even better if a dealer is willing to loan it out for a whole day. These trucks are smooth, quiet, and powerful for what they are. There are a few quirks here and there that took some time to get used to, but this truck turned out to be much nicer than the competition when I was in the market.

I am reading a lot into this topic but its taking a lot of time to find any answers... pre 2014 AFM engines are problematic?

Should I try to get a 2015 instead of 2014? Were any of these quirks fixed in 2015?

I don't have any brand loyalty, I'm simply looking for the best all around truck (most dependable, least amount of potential issues)

Chevy sake sounds fairly common, will certainly drive the truck on an extended drive. Thanks for the info on the shaking

You don't necessarily have to shoot for one year over another. Some 2014s had first model year blues including pretty shaky rides, but for the most part people seem happy. If you're shopping for a chevy, I'd personally look at used 16's simply for the factory HIDs even in the lowest trims. However, anything you buy can be modified/retrofitted/upgraded. Just my $.02

Go with GMC, the windshields are thicker and denser polymers throughout.

Most 2016 4x4 V8's are typically over 35k right now which is my top end

But do they still suffer from the shaking and potential AFM issues?

Thanks for the info guys!

Shaking and AFM issues.

Shaking, freeway test as mentioned.

AFM 5.3 L motor, 6.2 L not on it. I think that's right.

5.3 L put a Range device on it. Keeps it out of V4 mode.

You have to decide for your self which vehicle to buy. No one can make that decision for you. :happysad:

I love my 2016 Silverado RCSB. Only had it for 2 months, I guess I got lucky with mine. No chevy shake and the AFM shifting to me is smooth nothing like people here are saying. I'm only 20 years old so I haven't had the luxury of owning anything else but before I bought my Silverado I did want a Ram but glad I chose GM.
