2006 Silverado LT2 Heater Not Working Properly

Hello all: I have a 2006 Silverado LT2 that is having heater noise issues. The control head has the knobs to adjust temp for either side. When turning on the heater there is a clicking noise on the right side of the cab and the fan doesn’t work. At times after running and getting warmed up the heater fan then starts to run and function properly after I turn the heater on and off. This is very frustrating. Dealer looked at it and found a connector that needed attention. I was told if this doesn’t correct the issue I would need to replace the heater control head in the dash.

 

Does this make sense changing the controls in the dash with the noise coming from the right side of the cabin?

Also, the heater doesn’t seem to warm up the cab like my other 2006. My other 06 at 73 cooks the cabin. The truck having the issues with fan on has to be cranked up 78 or so to be luke warm. Was told it is functioning properly.

 

Do I need to go elsewhere to have this truck looked at? Control head to replace is 450 bucks from what I am told.

Need help so I don’t waste money on chasing a heater issue.

Your dealer doesn't know their stuff. This is a common issue. The blower motor "resistor" fails and sometimes also melts the connector plugged into it. There was even a recall on the version in the manual AC setup. I'd bet the resistor is your issue.

someone informed me there possibly was a recall or bulletin on this issue that GM paid for repairs. Anyone know the bulletin number so i can take to dealer to haggle them since they steering me in the wrong direction thus far.

There is a TSB on the blower motor resistor/connector. I did mine 2-3 years ago. I ended up doing it myself with parts given to me by the dealer. They were too busy with recalls and couldn't get me in for a month, during a cold snap & I had no heat. They gave me the parts so I could do it myself.

 

I don't recall the TSB number etc.

The part is located behind glove box and very accessible. Can be found anywhere on line and it's a 30 minute install.

Here is the TSB that i found. My truck does not have these codes in the VIN Decoder or glove box. Will this TSB still pertain to my truck?

didnt think so. Then should i go with the dealer saying the control module will need replaced vs. resistor?

I'd do the resistor. I don't know why there was never a TSB on the auto AC pickups, but it seems like it was just as common on them. The connector they found that needed replaced plugs into the resistor itself, and it's very common for it to melt when the resistor goes bad. If you do the resistor and pigtail it should fix the issue.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
