Dv8tion388 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Is this acceptable for an 2009 2500HD? Clearly the primer prep wasnt done right from the factory. Suggestions on recorse? Thanks
newdude Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Have you owned it since new? Paint and finish is typically under the 3yr 36k bumper to bumper. Rust through would have been 6yr/100k miles. Out on both counts and both factory warranty coverage so I wouldn't be expecting anything from GM. Really the only recourse I see is to have the hood professionally re-sprayed.
Formulabruce Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Sometimes GM will repaint a panel under the Loyalty program, if they think it could stop some bad vibes locally or even nationally. The problem is the base coat isn't bonded to the sealer. Most good shops would charge $1,000 to get that Right ( most of which is blocking it down) . If I was doing it, I would use a Waterbug to keep it smooth and get it down to sealer at 400 grit, then re spray base, and 2 coats of glam clear. I wouldn't use 3 coats due to the fact that the rest of the truck has "factory orange peal" in the paint, and you would want it to match.
O_J_Simpson Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Your truck is 8 years old. It was not manufactured by modern GM. Don't expect any goodwill. Bite the bullet and repaint it.
'01LS1 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Peeling & blowing the paint off with a power washer are quite different things. Did you buy the truck new or know if the hood was ever repainted? Where I use to work, our power washer was rated at 3300 psi. It would blow paint off of most anything if you weren't careful. Particularly around the edges & in the bends of sheet metal. To get a line like that, that wand had to have been 2-3" away from the surface.
Dv8tion388 Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 Owned since '11, 2nd owner. No accidents reported. It was bubblling up before it started to flake off. I flaked it all off at the time of the picture so I could get all the weak edges off. I used some edge sealer and patched it temporarly with vyinl wrap to protect the bare metal. No pressure washer was used to clean my truck. We're supposed to buy American, and I do when it comes to trucks but time and time again the fit and finish has always been poor.

Had a '92 half ton that did the same in terms of paint bubbling. The truck was two tone, silver top & black lower. Only the silver had a couple of bubbles in spots around the bed. Bought the truck used in '94 & think the issue showed up around '95 or '96? It was out of the warranty time frame they had at the time, but the local Chevrolet dealers body shop mgr agreed to repaint it at no charge. You might get lucky pending the dealers in your area or may be they'll offer to trade it in. Regardless, it will be a good time to find out if there were other similar issues on other vehicles from that time frame. Too note, have had black GM vehicles since the issue above & have never had the issue again.

Might not have been reported to carfax...I wouldn't rule out a respray...Most trucks of that 2007-2013 vintage have some good paint on them. Only spots I've seen issues is the fenders right behind the headlights, and wheel wells.
KMGZ400 Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 If there are no other areas of concern on the truck paint wise, just re spray the hood and be Done with it. Maybe you got a bad batch, but there's 10's of thousands of GMT900's that don't have the paint falling off.
