Purchasing 2009 Silverado is 229k Miles worth it?

I'm looking at a truck I'm going to test drive Tomorrow. 2009 Chevy Silverado extended cab work truck, V6 4.3 liter.

http://crossettcars.hasyourcar.com/InventoryDetail?id=09-CHEVROLET

I looked it over no rust and is very solid condition, started normal with no odd noises. He's asking about $9k but I'm going to talk him down to around $7500 .the truck was used for commercial purposes and mostly highway miles My main worry is it will become my daily drive to work and college I average about 13,500 miles a year and I'm not sure if 229k miles is reasonable compared to the price or if I'm going to get myself into a mess of repairs if I should walk away. Any knowledge you can throw at me would be great I'm unfamiliar with Chevy Silverados. Thanks.

The $$$ is the thing that has me saying no the most by far. That is a LOT of $$ for a 230k mile truck. NADA is showing $7,700 clean retail, which even I find a bit high but what do I know about the markets...anywho...

Its got crank windows, manual locks, manual mirrors, manual seats, but has cruise control, so if you are looking for power stuff...

Its the last of the old Gen 1 small block based 4.3 engines. 2008 or 2009 they switched to coil pack ignition, so no distributors to mess with like the 2007 and older 4.3 which is a plus. My only other thing that comes to mind is the transmission. Make sure it drives good when you take it for a spin. The 4L60 in the 2007-2011 era, we've had a decent number of them apart. They seem to lose 2nd or 3rd gear, blow the "salad bowl" clutch housing, sometimes straight burn out a gear and the clutch packs that run it or others.

No power anything? Keep looking.

terrible deal.... wouldn't pay more then 4 for that... and it doesn't even have a V8. That older V6 is miserable to drive too, I have an express van with that motor and its got absolutely no power

I'd pass on that deal even if it had a 5.3 in it. Handing over that much cash for a truck with that many miles is not wise for a daily driver because its at a point where the simple electric parts will eventually start to nickle and dime you into misery. At some point the transmission might also become an issue if not rebuilt recently. Far more better deals out there with lower miles that kind be had for the money you're considering handing over.

No.

Maybe if someone wanted to GIVE me a truck with that kind of mileage, I might consider it. But PAYING for it, much less $9k? That's ridiculous.

I registered so I could offer my two cents after perusing the forum. I just purchased my son a 03' Silverado 1500 LT 4x4 5.3L with 150k. They were asking 11500 and we ended up paying 9500. The paint was immaculate, had k&n CAI, lift kit, and some other little options installed by previous owner. I did have to perform a MAF cleaning after getting a P0101 which I understand is common with CAI. Hope my recent experience helps.

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
