Tail Gate Latch

OK guys.... heres my problem

 

I used some White Lithium Grease to keep the tailgate "like new"... problem is, now the darn thing won't stay shut..... I know, I know,I shouldn't have done it.....

 

So now I want to clean it out, whats the best stuff to use? WD 40 the snot out of it, or **GASP** pull the tail gate apart and clean it out???

 

Any ideas GREATLY appreciated

I don't know why grease would prevent the locking mechanism from locking. What exactly did you put it on?

I sprayed the Lithium grease on the posts, and onto the latches themselves.

I would suggest buying some degreaser from Wal-Mart. There are several good brands, including one that is sold in the automotive section in an orange bottle, and the name has the word orange in it. I would soak the crap out of it with that and use a rag to wipe it off. Keep doing until it is totally clean, then start over with a fresh coat of grease.
