The simple explanation of the PCV system is that it's a dedicated vacuum pump to scavenge the crankcase and evacuate any positive crankcase pressure. The issue occurs during normal PCV function while the dedicated vacuum source is eliminating crankcase pressure and improving ring seal. PROBLEM: The factory vacuum source is strong enough that it can and will pull out any fluids that are still vapor.

 

The newer the vehicle the stronger the vacuum source will be, resulting in much higher amounts of oil and unburnt fuels being scavenged from the crankcase through the PCV system and ultimately into the combustion chamber where they cause disruption in the efficiency of the cylinder firing and often results in detonation or pre-ignition. Then slowly the engine will start to build up a slow and inevitable collection of oil that starts to coat the intake, runners and combustion chambers.

 

When you install a properly functioning catch can and not some empty container with steel wool or home made dividers in it, you collect almost everything instead of collecting a little bit of oil and thinking you solved the problem. These empty cans are only catching the solids and the vapors are still getting through. That is where UPR has taken the time to develop a multi-stage, multi-chamber catch can system that will deliver the best performance in both coalescing and condensing in hot or cold applications.

 

SNAKE OIL:

There have been a lot of unethical businesses that market catch cans with scare tactics; stories of blown engines, a bunch of Direct Injection nightmares, and so on. That makes it easy to be swayed, or for someone to make light of the benefits of catch cans without ever understanding the true function and benefits.

So what if I don't want the CSS? What changes in the install process. Are the two vavle covers still bridged by one hose? What connects to the large WOT valve on the catch can? Then what connects to the air box on the drivers side? Anyone have pics of an install without the CSS? Thanks

With the stock intake you would have 1 open outlet on the airbox. You have 2, one for each cylinder bank. The hose on the top of the can goes onto one of those. That is why I went with the GM CAI instead of say, Cold Air Inductions - they also have 2 outlets on the tube. GM has one, so it works out for my case.

The new UPR Dual Valve Catch Can System without the CSS includes the connections needed for both sides. The WOT line will go from the catch can to the passenger side of the intake tube and the driver side valve cover where the oil cap used will be replaced with our quick connect insert and runs a line from the oil cap outlet to the driver side of the air intake. i just receve my upr catch can today... i was wondering if i want to keep my oil filer cap and dont put the css and that i plug off the second air fitting at the intake would it be ok or would i mess the setup....

The system is designed to pull the fresh air through the CSS mounted at the oil cap. The CSS can be removed very easily in a minute or two to be able to add or change the oil whenever you like. I always recommend the CSS for the best protection and to keep the filter and airbox fresh and clean.

but i dont have the css just the screw on thing that goes where the oil filer cap goes and then goes directly to the intake... can this make oil vapor go in the intake vs not putting this on and blocking one of the 2 intake vent and keeping my oil filer cap???

You can Block one of them off if you prefer to keep the oil cap. I really recommend the full system as I never like to take any chances with allowing oil into the combustion chambers and it's not about the cost or profits etc. My main concern is having a bulletproof system that protects the engine anywhere oil can sneak in.

...My UPR 6.2 with CSS setup works great! I regularly dump the espresso gunk that would have been digested by the intake. I routed a clear hose off the bottom barb making it easy and clean to dump into a pan.

I have no idea why it would have caused anything like that. I ran crc valve cleaner through it prior to putting the can on.

I'm experiencing the same vibration and found the issue to be the mounting of catch can to brake booster. Now looking for a better place to put the can. Where did you end up mounting it? 

 

Overall, UPR can kit is great just fixing this bothersome detail.

 

Funny, I also ran CRC cleaner prior to installing can and thought I had somehow messed up the engine...

    • I think we're reaching the end of constant projects/work.   The water pump bolt appears to have self-sealed, as it's not leaking anymore. I'll take it, and, I'm ready should it self-unseal! I was also getting an oil leak at the front oil pan seal and timing cover and came to find a pan bolt on the corner wasn't even finger-tight. Too easy. And, it was. But, it appears tightening it has reduced a leak producing spots on the ground every time I parked, to just a weep, leaving an occasional dot on the cardboard that lives under it while parked. That's acceptable on a 30 year old engine in my book. I do hate leaks, but, replacing the pan seal is quite the job.   The rear washer line is reconnected and the sprayer works, although getting an intermittent washer fluid drip off the bottom. I think it's just residual...the reservoir filled up the channel in the rear floor and drained down into the upside-down spare tire/wheel. So there are residual puddles all over under there, will wait a few days for it to spill out and dry before I go chasing a potential leak.   The door speaker...no dice. Speaker works just fine, it's that channel in the factory amp that's gone bad. Can't win 'em all. And, whomever buys this will probably tear out the factory radio for something more modern anyway.   I put about 110 miles on it yesterday. Put a lot of wind and heat into it with some mountain driving. Still runs great. Near the top of the pass I got off on a gravel side road and put about 10 miles on with 4hi engaged. Works great.   If ya squint, she's mint! God I wish these were still in production. I can see why they're not. They're rudimentary bordering on agricultural. They began life as a pickup truck and then modern society demanded the rear be enclosed for kids and crap. They're still a pickup underneath, and that gives them lots of ride character, sway and bounce and bump steer. They're alive on the road, and, at least for purposes of nostalgia, it makes driving one a lot of fun.   The Check Engine light did come back on the pass, P0134 for the upstream O2 sensor dropping out. Putting heat into the exhaust causes it after about 10-15 seconds of increased load at higher RPM. The downstream sensor is completely mangled (someone clearly had a rough time removing it, but they didn't replace it?) so I'll just put two in it. For what, mostly to cure the CEL, I can tell the cat is damaged. It's not plugged or fractured, but it's not catalyzing. There's some guilt in not fixing it, but at a cost of $500+, the truck just won't get driven much under my watch. I dislike the smell...running the truck in the shop even with both doors open and the overhead fans blasting, I still reek of pre-cat exhaust. Sticks to clothing and everything else.   Window motor (I'm dreading this), and tires, and that should be about it. 50/50 on Starfire Solarus H/T's, or spending $20 more per tire and going with Cooper Discoverer RT's. I like the look of the RT's a lot more, but is it worth it? I've got a really good (just very old) Toyo Open Country XTX on there now and I like it.  
    • From what I've seen, they "could" sell the switch but designed the assembly such that the switch can't be readily removed and replaced without removing a plastic locating pin.  Sure appears aimed at forcing the end user to purchase a $900 shifter assembly instead of a $20 switch.  Thankfully I still have some extended warranty left...  this one has had warranty repairs almost every 5K miles from the day I bought it.  
    • I'm well aware of the typical bathtub failure curve, but plotted, this truck has been more like an elevated straight line.  It started days off the lot with misfires that GM couldn't solve for almost 2 years, and steadily continued over the last 5 years with repeat replacements of wiring harnesses, camera modules, cameras, parking sensors, head unit, rear windows, rear leaf springs and bushings, lower control arms, a radiator, and now an ac compressor and a column shift assembly.  
    • It was a commercial vehicle at one point. I went through all the menus and see nothing. But ill look at mygmc.com. Thank you
