Rust on 2014 Silverado?

I've read some things about Fluid Film stripping off the wax coating. Has anyone here ever heard of that happening?

It did on mine...

It hasn't on mine but my wax wasn't flaking off like some trucks were on here. I also don't clean my frame off with a pressure washer. The pressure will blast the wax coating off if it's flakey like the original poster's pics or has had fluid film applied.

I only lightly rinse my truck with cold water. The fluid film/engine oil is a good enough barrier that you don't need to wash the underside so aggressively.

My wax coating wasn't falling off, and I don't wash my truck but twice a year, let alone wah underneath.

Within a short time of having the fluidfilm applied, the OE coating shriveled up and feel off in places...

Haha that's strange. I've been applying the stuff twice a year for over 2-1/2 years. I'm planning on posting pics in the spring of what it looks like.

^^ Yes do not mix Fluid Flim, Honee Goo or any other wax or oil based product with the NOX rust. The oil will penetrate the NOX and will lift it off in big chunks. Get a wire brush and a wire wheel on a 4" grinder or die grinder, clean it up and wipe it with brake cleaner. Buy a can of NOX from your dealer. I use it to touch up spots where the lift contacts.

LOL if NOX rust sucks so much that it falls off, why are you so eager to put it back on? The stuff hardens and flakes off within a year or two all on its own.

If you're going to bother with wire brushing it off, you might as well put something like Chassis Saver on instead.

Hi!

Brownsville, Texas - similar climate to Sarasota, Fl - hot and humid and near the ocean. I have a 2016 Silverado WT - wasn't expecting a wax dipped over bare metal frame. Here's my recipe - no beach running. As a poster above noted, the high pressure spray to remove sand and salt - that will strip the wax off. The hand car wash place is out 'cause that's exactly what they do. So I wash the thing and detail it myself. Anytime I notice any bare frame exposed (already happened in a three month old vehicle), out comes the sander, then a primer, followed by a black powder coat. Bummer, 'cause I'm 71 yrs. old and don't need to be crawling under a vehicle once a month to do frame work. In the end, I expect to fully paint the frame 'cause every time that vehicle goes up on a rack (tires, oil change, new shocks, etc.) there's going to be some scraping off of the frame gunk.

Fortunately, you and I live in a warm climate where we can work on and clean the vehicle all year round, so the salt doesn't stay on the underside for any length of time.

FWIW, in case everyone hasn't noticed, I'm obsessed about rust on a vehicle!

Is it necessary to wire brush/scrape at rust spots before spraying over them? I don't have much rust yet, but I want to stay informed and on top of it.

I would do it. Others may have a different opinion. I treat the frame as outer body panels. Remove all rust. Scrape/sand/prime/paint/clearcoat. However, there are lots of products which neutralize the rust by spraying over it. I prefer the painting.

Here are some pictures after 1 year (2 applications).

That's what my frame looks like after about 2 coats of fluid film over a 7 month period. It literally takes me about 15 minutes to crawl around the truck and apply the fluid film. I'm very pleased with the product and how it interacts with the oem wax. Works great!

yep keeps the wax soft and tacky. I upgraded my front suspension after I took the pics and in the area where my breaker bar scraped against the factory wax, it scraped but didn't peel or flake away. I just hit the area with FF later on. And even today, no rust. I don't get what others are doing wrong or we're doing right to have these vastly different results. I love not having to wash my truck every day during the winter!

Considering I had mine professionally sprayed with fluid film; yeah, I "did it wrong"...you should chose your words a little better.

Well I didn't mean to offend you.

I'm just baffled over how we got such different results.

My wax hasn't "shriveled" or peeled off like you are so adamant will happen. I've applied FF over a dozen times now. Maybe your pro's were using the thinner version because it's easier to spray. Mine is the stuff on the right.
