Rust on 2014 Silverado?

So are the 16s and 17s beyond this problem? It was pretty much the last straw for me with my 14. I really like the new front end redo and am thinking of coming back, but my wife's 2010 avalanche frame was (and still is) in better shape than my 14 was when I traded it away. Would have to be an extremely good deal though.

My 2014's wax coating still looks pretty good, aside from underneath where the lift apparently scraped it off. I've also got a few specks of surface rust around the frame holes.

What do you guys recommend that I can spray over the surface rust to keep it from getting worse? Should I spray right over the wax coating?

Underneath, I think I'll have to crawl under and scrape the rust off. I'd also like to spray there, so I'm not sure if the remaining wax is a problem.

My '16 2500 has surface rust all over the low points. Quite annoyed with it. Have taken it to two dealers now and they both said there's nothing they would do unless it rusted through the various parts.

I've owned 6 different GM trucks now and I'm really disappointed that this is now considered acceptable. None of my previous trucks had a spot of rust on them and some had well over 100k miles. My '16 has been rusting underneath since day one. I bought it brand new and have put 9k miles on it and can't believe it has so many parts rusting, surface and/or otherwise. I live in Atlanta, GA and it's never seen more that a gravel driveway. Certainly nothing that explains it. Just plain sad.

Well that sucks... Was hoping they had fixed that. They obviously changed something in 2014. I guess not enough care to complain or have noticed it yet.

It's pretty hard to take you serously when you say that your previous trucks never had rust. Every previous truck I had ever owned or have seen in parking lots or at friends' garages have had frame rust. Ford GM Ram Toyota Nissan. ALL WERE RUSTY

Well I don't have them here for a side by side comparison, except for the 2007, which is very clean underneath. Maybe they had some hints of browning but none had flaky rust that I'm seeing on this new one. They were all GA trucks and I never had any thoughts of 'hey look at that rust over there.' Now my brother had a 2010 that spent 45k miles of its life in Canada and that thing had flaking rust all over the underside, which was sad but I suppose to be expected.

My '16 was made in Texas, shipped to GA, and I bought it brand new. Aside from wet roads from rain, no water immersion to speak of. No excuse for the rusting suspension busing sleeves, torsion bar crossmember, shock absorber welds, tie rods, trans and oil drain bolts, etc.

Without any intent to call you out personally, it is complacency like yours that makes it acceptable for GM to continue making rust buckets, which is what these trucks are. They need to be held to a higher standard. The quality is atrocious.

I have called out GM for using the wax that they use several times. In fact, I've made the case several times that you shouldn't try to reapply the Nox Rust wax. What I'm saying is that all manufacturers do a poor job of corrosion protection on their frames. The new aluminum F-150 have frame rust problems because the e-coating process isn't enough. Ram has always had frame rust problems even after switching to paint, Toyota has had massive rust rot problems with their frames despite having a nice shiny paint coating, Nissan has frame rust.

I have been completely satisfied with the quality of my truck. Starts every time, strong engine, handles huge payloads, great transmission, good interior, fuel efficient, etc. Absolutely the frame wax SUCKS, but I'd still take it over the quality/design deficiencies the other brands have. The frame is easy to deal with. I've demonstrated how to keep it rust free and it only requires a half hour each year.

Fair enough. I have not owned any competitive truck. However, I do own a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe with zero rust issues, and I did trade in a 13 year old 2001 Santa Fe also no frame rust. The technology to make a decent product exists. GM just chooses not to use it. There is a lot to love about the new Silverado - the rust and poor paint job are not among them. These are so easily solved by GM, they just choose not to care.

Metal oxidizes, it will happen. There is not a vehicle out there with out some sort of oxidation.

Does anyone know if the insides of our frames are dipped in wax, too? I was thinking about doing an internal rust coating (the Eastwood one, probably), but I'm not sure if this would cause issues if there is wax inside the frame.

I just noticed rust spots on my '16 as well on the chrome parts (bumpers mainly). I wash it weekly (microfiber drying) and store it inside a garage. This has been a super mild winter so there hasn't even been much salt or brine on the roads.

I contacted my local dealer about it but have yet to hear back. I hope they do something or I will be jumping ship pretty quick which is a shame cause I like just about everything else about the truck!

Good luck with the dealer. Mine told me that the warranty applies to panels that are rusted through. He told me a story of someone who came in with rust bubbles in the paint and he told them to "come see him when it rust clear through. Until then he couldn't help them." Seemed quite proud of himself.

It would appear that after all these years of building a loyal customer base with solid trucks, GM has decided to cut costs, maximize profits, and hope we'll all forgive them when our brand new trucks start rusting before their first oil changes. Probably just think we're all so blinded by brand loyalty that we'd never buy anything else. Fortunately for them I hear stories of similarly stupid things occurring in competitors trucks.

I still like my truck but between the rusting frame / underbody components, and the oil leak from inside the bell housing that's going to require transmission removal to repair (apparently another known issue since early in the line that should have been long ago addressed), my brand loyalty is wearing a bit thin.

It's a night and day difference between the 2014 I had that started this post and the 2014 I have now. Around the same manufacture date, except one saw a year in New York (1 snow season) and the other has been in Florida, always near the water. Yet, the current one doesn't have a spec of non surface rust. It even barely has a spec of surface rust. I'm just pissed that they threw the truck back on the street side for the same price and are labeling it in "Excellent Condition".

    • Are you going to take long trips in it?  If so, try out the seats in the various trims. For me the lower trim level seats were not comfortable.
    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
    • I’ve own several successful businesses. I’ve bought homes and lived in different states. I’d witness several generations buy homes and survive in different economic circumstances. You get awful sippy when people have different experiences than you do. You live a life. I’ve lived a life. It seems our experience has been different. You can point out generalized statistics. Some people learn how to thrive when the odds are against them. Living in different states does make a difference in a persons quality of life and economic outcomes and opportunities. That’s a fact Jack. It’s my truth, my life. Hard work and long hours the right environment made my families life easier. And yes moving to a different state increased the odds of that happening. Stats are generalized. People who thrive don’t make excuses. They beat the odds. Others get mad and point to those statistics. I guess that’s you. My post pointed out how you helped people beat the odds. Somehow your panties got in a wad. Go figure.
