I just had an idea of replacing the red tail lights with amber ones

To give my 2016 sierra a personal touch

i am not sure how would it looks since the housing is red ?

Any experiences or ideas ?

likely a bad call

i'm not sure where you are but pretty much everywhere your tail lights/bulbs have to be red

orange is for the front markers and turn signals

i had a cop give me a tough time once becuz on my old truck i had added driving lights (they have white for driving, amber for fog and some tiny blue bulbs that come on with the daytime running lights). he went on that i'm not allowed to have blue lights on my truck since they are only permitted on police vehicles and someone might mistake me for a cop. he was nice enough and only gave me a verbal warning so i told him i'd disconnect them - i never did. what i really wanted to do was ask him was if he actually believed that someone would mistake my 1989 chevy 4x4 standard cab, short box , stepside that's jacked up 6" and riding on 35" bfg mud tires for a police vehicle - but like i said, he was nice enough about it and i didn't feel like pushing my luck.

Funny you should mention that! I went to court for this and you should have seen how the judge put that RCMP down and even called him an illiterate. If you look it up in the annexe of the rule book it says you're not allowed flashing blue or red lights in the front. Also to be considered a light they need to be of a certain intensity.

To the OP if you are considering putting amber bulbs behind the red lens it's a waste of time because it will not make much of a difference in the hew. It will remain red. But were you to put blue bulbs in there you would get a nice purplish tone.

I wouldn't alter the color of the red tail lights.

You could argue the letter of the law all you want. If a cop sees a tail light that is not red, or a light he thinks is the wrong color on the wrong end of the truck, he can still pull you over and give you a ticket. And once he pulls you over, remember "he is always right".

You can tweak your lights all you want, but just be aware that drawing attention to your vehicle from the public, will also include drawing the attention of law enforcement. I have met cops that are nice and cops that seem hellbent on ruining your day. You don't know which kind they are until they walk up to your window.
