What made me realize what I was missing not owning a diesel was my last trip to the mountains pulling a 24' enclosed snowmobile trailer. I've made several trips west pulling an enclosed trailer or travel trailer with a gas motor but our last trip a buddy had a new diesel we drove and I was amazed at the towing power you get in the hills and at 10k elevation. I don't tow everyday or truly need a diesel but love the disposable power.

No but you're obviously towing something

Bro had a 6 L the 1st summer he had his 5er. He doesn't tow it a lot, but he got rid of the gasser the 2nd year he had the trailer.

Back to the '94 scenario, I didn't tow ANYTHING @ the time, didn't put enough miles on it annually to see any fuel savings nor would I be keeping it long enough. I generally get a new truck every 6 years.

What's the average cost of your oil changes and fuel filters?

Together how much in total and I guess if you remember the def fluid cost that too. I'm trying to see how often you change the oil and how much is the cost.

Right now mines like 45$? With tire rotation. I know I'm

Expecting it to be more if I go to diesel

Do you guys like the duramax or prefer another engine for a diesel. ( I know this is a gm thread )

I was looking at the new power stroke or duramax

I like simple, had Cummins from 1989 through 2004.5...most of them I ran to around 300k before trading. The only one that cost me a lot of money was the 2004.5...a set of injectors cost me $2400, but I picked up several gallons of water that caused them to fail. I put a dual-disc clutch in that cost me $$, Dynatrac hubs to save wear on things to the tune of $2k, bypass filters to prolong life, etc. I probably had $10k in add-on to the last truck alone to make it what I wanted...

All mine were 5.9l, have been out of that scene long enough that I don't know much about the 6.7l. I doubt they are much different that the other two at this point...over-emissioned, over-engineered.

The Cummins is a good engine, but the newer suspension and pieces of the drivetrain suck...ball joints are not preloaded in the AAM so they always have play, the steering boxes wear early, the tie rods ends fail, the AAM ujoints are problematic, etc.

And not for nothing, you can't mistake the sound of a inline 6 cylinder Cummins.

If you delete the DPF & DEF & shut off or block the EGR, then I think you'll be very happy with your truck and can hold onto it for a long long time. The only other issue that I've learned about on here would be the lift pumps. I'm still not up to speed on the issues they have, and what the fix is, that would be for someone else to chime in on. But I do understand your desire to own one while you can. With that being the case, I'd go ahead and go for it, satisfy the craving. Are you thinking of buying new, or used? Also- you asked about the other diesels- I really can't see any reason to go with the PS or Cummins over the Duramax. Between the Duramax combined with the Allison, there is not a better drive train out there. The Allison transmission really is that much better than anything offered by Ford or Dodge.

I'll probably get bashed but I personally think Cummins wrote the book on diesels. Their I6 is a monster. I've owned 4 new ram gasser but didn't even look at ram because the same body style has been out since 2009. They are due for a change.

After Two years and 47,000 miles, I can honestly say it's the best truck I have ever owned. I traded in a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ Crewcab with 6.2 and Max Tow for this 2015 2500 High Country with Duramax. A third of my miles have been towing a 9,000 lb travel trailer. I get better mileage with the Duramax, both towing and unloaded, than I did with the 6.2 gas. As for maintenance, my Duramax oil changes cost $69 every 7,500 miles, not that much difference than what the 2014 LTZ was going to cost. Would I do it all again? Absolutely!

That including the fuel filter and all?

I have not changed the fuel filter yet. You do that at approx 50,000 mile intervals. So, $100 or so, every 2 - 3 years. That's not going to break the bank. As for the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), approx $25 per 5K miles (.005 cents per mile) Like I said, that's not going to break the bank either. I love my truck!

Yeah I have to agree, once a year MINIMUM on the fuel filter or 20,000 miles.

Unless you opt for an older pre-2005 Dodge with a NV5600 6spd...then the Dodge platform has it...

I am firmly in the inline diesel camp. Actually, I am not fond of any V engine, gas or diesel, but the choices are limited. Based on some bad experiences with larger Cummins diesels, I wouldn't buy a Cummins again for any reason. I have no real need for a Dmax or PStroke, so I can avoid this sort of thing. The 6.0L does just fine for me and my situation. I only buy diesels for larger trucks and equipment, and no Cummins to be found in the bunch. It really all depends on what one needs to get done. I never get any gooey feelings over a new diesel irregardless of brand or application. I go thru over 20,000 gallons of diesel a year and have long since left all the ooh aah factor about diesels. They are just engines to get a job done. If I needed a diesel in a pickup, I would get one. But I truly would have to need one.. No way I would get one for some sort of status symbol.

For the fuel filter thing, I would replace the stock setup with some sort of bowl style filter housing to see the level of fuel and be able to see when the filter actually needed to be changed. A davco, Racor, or similar type of unit. Filters for them are dirt cheap, around $12-$15 a pop. And DEF, check a local commercial truck dealer. I can get DEF from a local Mack Truck dealership for $1.89 a gallon. Pull up to them, they run a hose out, and top off the DEF tank. Car, pickup, heavy truck, equipment, they will top off anything with DEF. No high priced boxes of stuff that has been sitting on a shelf or high priced bulk at a truck stop.

Im not telling you what to do, but 50,000 miles on a fuel filter is not good. Once a year at least. I changed my filter every time i change the oil.

My mistake. I historically follow what the truck "tells me to do on the DIC". It's implying change the "fuel" filter at approx 50K. Based upon your/ya'lls comments, I went back and read the manual. It's says "22,500" or less if needed. Clearly, I missed that section. (old eyes?) I will be getting the filter changed on Monday. Thanks for the heads up. I think the comment, "once a year.." is not a bad idea. Anyway, I love the truck and can't see me ever going back to a 1500 series. Again, thanks.

It's a shame you had a problem with Cummings diesels. In my business Cummings has been the go to engine for power and fuel saving. We've used hundreds since the 80s from 4clys to high horsepower engines in our epuipment in the high speed land clearing field. I guess you're problems mostly come from emission related problems that most on road diesels seem to have a problem with.
