Rear Facing Car Seat 2014 Double Cab

Recommended Posts

Simple Request here - does any one have photos and/or recommendations on rear facing car seat....

I've got a 2014 double cab (not a crew so lets not dwell on that).

Appreciate the help in advance! Thanks

For infant, The chicco keyfit 30 works real nice.

For toddler, you are going to want one that is NOT a convertible bootser seat. Otherwise it won't fit. I have a CC and our Diono convertible seat hits the back of the front seat, so you will need as short of "backrest" as you can find in a double cab.

If you haven't shopped for one yet, most places that sell them will let you try to test fit it in your vehicle before purchasing. So I would just tell you to go and test a couple out and see what you are happy with.

Stay away from the Recaro toddler seats. Rear facing in my super cab f150, my wife was basically riding on the dash and complained every second of those trips.

Swing by Buy Buy Baby and explain your inquiry. They let me take a bunch of seats out to the parking lot to test fitment in my new truck for #2.

Aslong as it is installed in the center of the rear seat as recommended you shouldn't have any issues. I have a cc and it's tight if I put it in the sides.

I have the evenflo platinum safemax which is a three in 1, it fits in my double cab in the middle fine and the little man loves it

When you guys have the child seat in the middle (or on the side) are you having to jack your seats all the way forward? Or do you still have some comforts in terms of space?

- - By the way I'm saving all your seat recommendations. The wife is due in July..

A double cab with an infant car seat or a rear facing convertible is very tight. You'll need the passenger seat nearly all the way forward and not reclined back. It's not very comfortable for a passenger. I did some research when I went to the convertible and some take less space than others.

Some people put the baby seat in the center position because its safer in a side impact crash. but once you have 2 kids, someone has to ride in a window seat.

I talked about that with my wife and she did NOT want to have to lift the kid into the middle every time (she takes them to daycare daily) I also preferred to have the kids sit next to the door. So we have a set of seats in both vehicles, none are in center position.

With my truck, I tell you what, my wife has crawled back and forth from the front seat to the rear and now can sit between our two children to feed them. If we had a child seat in the center, that would not be possible. This is especially useful on long trips to Grandma's house for holidays.

keep in mind that you will be stuck using car seats of some kind for the next 9+ years. if you are at all thinking about a new vehicle, now is the time to move to a crew cab

I have a 2014 double cab and twin 20 month old boys. my truck isnt the family car but i still pick them up from day care once or twice a week. They are currently rear facing and while tight, its really not that bad. I'm 6' 3" tall and with the seat behind me I have to sit further up than id like but i'm not hugging the dash at all. Probably should have gotten a crew cab but for that much more money i don't think it was worth it, especially if kids aren't in the car every day. If you only have 1, you can put them in the middle (this is difficult leaning in so far) or behind the passenger seat (much better option assuming your wife is smaller than you are....mine sits comfortably with the seat back there).

What i do is keep the seat behind the passenger in all the time and just unhook the one behind me and turn it sideways and unbuckled for most of the time and then swing it around, buckle, and tug to tighten it when i need to put one of the boys in.

I think I'll get some room back once i go front facing in a few months.

My point with this is don't listen to people that tell you its not possible, i read all of these comments when i was buying my truck and it scared me. I'd 6'3" tall with 2 tall boys and am making out just fine.

If you want to see some pics, PM and I can take them.

We had a graco click connect infant seat in my 14 double cab. Put in base in the middle and worked out fine. I am 6'3 and had my seat all the way back and reclined pretty far. When carrier was installed into base, the carrier would be in between the seats. The little guy liked it because he could see me, because my seat was so far back. When he went to a bigger seat, I got a crew cab. Was a good excuse to get a new truck.

Not all fire departments know how to properly install carseats. I have fixed 4-5 improperly installed infant and convertible seats that were installed at the fire department.

Its not rocket science but it can be done wrong. Most often I see latch anchors used combined with the seatbelt. Not correct. Most often I see seatbelts not fully locked out. Buckled but still in spool mode. Alot of parents think the seatbelt will lock and keep the seat secure in a crash. The reality is it will not and may allow the seat to move enough to cause serious injuries or worse. Ive seen it happen.

I've been CPS certified since 2012.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on 3 forward facing seats in a crew cab and what to do with the top anchor for the middle seat?

My 17' crewcab has 3 top tether straps across the top of the backseat. There is no LATCH anchors in the center rear seat. This should be the same all the way back to 2003 trucks. Some 2500-3500's were late adopters.

Anyway, If I were in your shoes with 3!!!! FF carseats in the back, I would use the locked out seatbelt in the center position combined with the top tether. This configuration is recommended in your situation. Unless you have triplets, I would have the oldest child sit in the center and then move to a belt positioning booster by age or weight depending on your state laws. Usually by 4 years old. Keep them in a booster until 8 yrs old. Many states have removed the weight and height standards for car seat use and have instead established age as the only factor. Carseats until 8 years old no matter what.

Getting all 3 seats in tight will be challenging. Your local Police Or State Patrol office should hopefully have a CPS certified person who can help you. PM me as well if you need.

So I was able to get all 3 in and tightened down. However, the owner's manual states to loop the top tether from the outside seats through the top loop and connect to the middle top tether. This leaves the middle seat top tether to loop back to one of the outside loops at the top. If that makes sense.
