HID Install Question

Hey guys,

 

Installed Kensun HID kit maybe 3 weeks ago. My truck is daily driver so every night I come home and it's dark. On two occasions I realized while driving that my left headlight was out. On both occasions turning them on and off did nothing. However, as soon as I got home, both times, I turned the truck off and immediately turned it back on and both lights worked. Any ideas on what could be the source? Before turning my truck off this last time I took the cover off and played with all of the connections and the bulb and everything was tight and secure. I have my multimeter in the truck now to see if I can trace the problem back or see where I'm losing Voltage but wanted to post to see if anyone experienced this. I'm thinking it may be faulty ballast they supplied but I don't know enough about these bulbs. When they fail are they intermittent or would they just completely fail? I'm going to swap ballast tomorrow and see if problem switches bulbs. I just think it's weird how I immediately turn the car off and back on and they work...Thanks!

Sure sounds like a bad ballast.

Had the same issue with my Morimoto's was a bad ballast. Swap the ballasts side to side and see if the issue follows.

Are you running a seperate relay for power to the hid's. I had an issue where one of my lights would not fire at all and needed to add the relay harness. I also had a 2006 gto where one of the lights would not fire all the time. Tried new ballast and found out it was a power issue and needed the relay direct from the battery. One way to determine if it is a ballast issue is swap the ballast to the other light and see if you still have the issue with the same light or if the problem followed the ballast to the other light. If it follows the ballast to the new light then you have a faulty ballast. If the issue stays with the same light then it is likely a power issue.

Great point, I did not use a relay. I felt like the existing wiring was sufficient to handle the ballast in-rush current. Now with my problem I may need to rethink that if the ballast turns out to be good...

 

I appreciate the feedback guys. I will swap the ballast and see if the problem follows the ballast. If that is the problem I will stick with my setup and just keep an eye on things. I'll definitely add the relay if needed.
