Toyo open country at2 aren't quiet!

After doing a lot of research and asking members, everyone told me the at2's were quiet.. I had the 35x12.5 toyo oc at2s installed on my truck last week and they humm pretty loudly especially below 40mph.. I wouldve thought it would have been worse at higher speeds but its the exact opposite..

 

was talking to a guy yesterday that said the same thing, said this time around he went with the micky thompson baja atz p3s and they dont make any noise.. they dont look quite as aggressive as the at2 toyos, anyone run these?

Following also as I am trying to decide between toyo open country, Mickey fun country and Goodyear duratracs. Quite is VERY important to me. I have owned three sets of Bridgestone revo and loved them but looking for a little more aggressive.

I have both tires, right now. The AT2s are smooth and quiet, whereas the P3s were a pain to balance and much more rough & noisy than the Toyos. I was a Mickey fan and loved the first gen ATZs that I ran on my Sierra. With that said, the Toyo AT2s have crappy wet and winter traction as compared to the original Toyo ATs that I had prior.

 

Currently running both tires and I can tell you neither will be run again. Looking elsewhere for my next set.

It's sickening to think that this is as good as it gets. I increased tire pressure from 33 to 40 all the way around.. didn't really tell a difference, maybe it's a little better.. on the hwy, 50+mph it's not bad, but around town esp 15-40mph the at2s have decent noise to them..

General Grabber AT2 and Kuhmo AT51 have done well for me. Both can be had with the snowflake rating for better winter traction.

I had LT (load range C) Toyo AT2's on my last truck, in 275/65/18. I thought they were pretty smooth and quiet, for an aggressive AT. I put them on par with my old Cooper AT3's, which everyone raves about. That being said, a standard LT (non-extreme) Toyo AT2, in a 275mm width, is going to be much quieter than the Toyo AT2 Extreme in a 12.50" width. Even though they're the same tire, yours will perform much differently than mine did. That's something you have to think about when getting opinions from other people about tires. Also, you'll find that "noise" is a relative term. When my dad rode in my old truck, he said the road noise was "terrible", because he was used to his Michelin street tires. Then, another buddy rode with me that same week, and couldn't believe how "silent" my truck was, because he was used to his 1/4 tread (and not rotated properly) mud tires, haha. Two completely different opinions about the exact same tires in one week, haha.

I've heard good things about the Falken AT3w. They look like a good aggressive tread, with good wear protection.

I have about 6000 miles on my Duratracs and can now hear a very slight hum if I listen for it. I'll be rotating them in a thousand or so miles, I'm wondering if that'll make any difference. Other than that, I run them at 40psi and traction is excellent on dirt roads, snow covered roads and wet / dry roads. I have not gone rock climbing or anything that's really off road so I can't rate them for that.

Yes, I have Falken AT3W's on my new truck, and they're super quiet....but I only have like 1000 miles on them, haha.

I had at2's on a 3/4 ton Duramax and they were awesome. I could see were the new at extremes would be noisy though. lot more aggresive tread!

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
