SilveradoSaver Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 (edited) Have any of you replaced the factory spare tire under the truck with a larger one? My truck came factory with 18" wheels and I have upgraded to 20" with larger tires as well (33"). I have also had a Borla exhaust installed, so not sure if that changed the space allowance for a larger tire under there. Also, can you mount a regular steel rim under the truck or does it require a special rim in order to be attached under there? Never released the spare so I have no idea. I came out to a nail in my tire this morning and I caught it early enough I could drive to get it repaired, but want to prepare for a worst case scenario if I have blown a tire. Thanks! Chris Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 Just upgrade the tire to be simple. I wouldn't want a nice wheel under there. If you are set on putting a larger wheel under there, make sure the center hole is the same size as the 17" wheel you have as a spare. Also with a nicer wheel, the bottom of the winch that holds the wheel up there will be rubbing on the wheel face. Some trucks came with a nicer wheel and some have the steel 17" with a bunch of holes

I wasn't going to put the same wheel I have under the truck; I was just going to buy a plain 20" steel rim and the same tire I have on my truck now. I figured with all the crap kicked up under the truck too putting a nice new wheel to match the rest wouldn't be smart, haha. Plus, hopefully I never need it...
Chris Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 Mine is this as is the one on my friends 2014 SLT with a March 2013 date. This is the nice one from a 2009 Tahoe Hybrid and on some newer trucks. But if you come across a 20" that works, I want to know because I run an odd size. The closest 17" I can run is a 255/65R17
LongrangeLauber Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 Run the steel wheel you have and just buy a bigger tire (if it'll even fit). I wouldn't worry about getting a matching wheel size, waste of money. And if you're gonna stick with 33's then you should be fine with the factory spare for short distances honestly
Hoginedgewood Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 I doubt you can fit an equivalent tire under there, but if you went through all the hassle, I'd bet you will never need it. I had a flat years ago, put a smaller tire on the rear, the limited slip differential kicked in on a hard turn, I would not worry bout it until it happens, then, if it's a rear decide if it's worth rotating front to rear then spare on the front.
RyanbabZ71 Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 like stated above even with trucks that have a 20" rim they use a 17/18 inch spare tire with an equivalent tire to match the overall height.
SilveradoSaver Posted February 12, 2017 Author Posted February 12, 2017 Thanks for the input guys. I will probably keep my 17" wheel but put a larger tire on it (if there's room; still need to check). I'm guessing a 285/70/17 is the closest I'll get to 33" (without going over)?

I believe Rawyzf has a 285/70/17 Cooper STT Pro in his spare tire slot, but not totally sure if he mounts it inside with it. He made a post awhile back with his spare tire next to his mounted tires at that time and said it was his full size spare, but idk if he leaves it in his garage, bed of his truck under the cover, or if it ended up fitting into the spare tire spot. I think I saw someone else say they fit a 33" spare tire without issues, but can't find that post. I'll quote Rawyzf's spare tire post from his build thread. It's on page 14. http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/171035-rawyzfs-2015-silverado-z71-build/page-14 My full size spare with Cooper STT Pro, white letters out. Let me know thoughts on the white letters out, I like it. As soon as I have some extra funds, I plan to put Cooper STT Pros all around. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk 1

SilveradoSaver Posted February 15, 2017 Author Posted February 15, 2017 Well I took my truck into a shop today and can tell you the 285/70/17 spare tire I wanted to mount under the truck does not fit. It would end up hitting my aftermarket exhaust and trailer hitch.
Ffkomo Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 Many cars have smaller sized spare tires. I'd just keep it, should be fine unless you are running long distances
JoJoSilverado Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 Did you ever hear back from him? I'm curious what he does with the spare (if he even carries it with him), or if he just mounted that tire on temporarily for the photo perhaps?

amxguy1970 Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I bought a 255/75/17 which is a 32.1, I feel comfortable that will fit or I can make it fit. Will know in a few weeks. Anyone hear a more definitive answer from anyone or anywhere? Tyler
