How can I fix trans cooler ?

Hey guys,

First of all I'm so glade that I found such a forum specialized in gm trucks.

I live in Abu Dhabi (UAE) and I'm driving GMC Sierra 2015 - 1500 4X4 basic options with 6-speed trans and 5.3L engine

I would like to fix a trans oil cooler since mine ain't got no cooler on it and weather around here is so hot in the summer and trans oil temp. rise up to 100 deg. on highway regular speed no tow no racing, I think that's a little over.

Bought Tru-Cool trans oil cooler and want to fix it. I have read on the internet about almost every thing about how to install it and all except the (Trans oil hose configuration) for sierra 1500 2015 , and how to connect cooler hoses in series. I couldn't find this information anywhere.

workshops in my country are great in fixing cars but dump when it comes to modification.

can someone help please ?

All these trucks have a built in trans cooler it is a part of the radiator. The transmission has a thermostat built into it and it open up around 192 degrees (Fahrenheit). If you remove the thermostat it'll more than likely run cooler

you are absolutely right. I tried to remove that thermostat once and trans oil fairly cool down but not enough for off-road driving.

I need to fix that aux cooler anyhow

Well if you're dead set on installing an aftermarket cooler then make sure you install it after the factory cooler, that way the fluid will be cooler before going back to the trans

I think that's what he's asking about, which line to tie into from the radiator...

Glad we have American iron running around Abu Dhabi........ If you are seeing transmisson temps of 100 degrees Celsius - yes that is a bit warm......... Have you ever seen the TRANSMISSION HOT warning?

......... the transmission reaches a normal

operating temperature between

71°C to 93°C (160°F to 200°F).

TRANSMISSION HOT IDLE

ENGINE

This message displays and a chime

may sound if the transmission fluid

in the vehicle gets hot. Driving with

the transmission fluid temperature

high can cause damage to the

vehicle. Stop the vehicle and let it

idle to allow the transmission to

cool. This message clears and the

chime stops when the fluid

temperature reaches a safe level.

Thanks guys for all of your replays but I'm still looking for that particular information

I saw trans oil lines coming from trans case straight to the bottom side of my rad. one connect left side and the other connect right side.

I think am gonna just pick one of the two randomly and insert the new loop of aux cooler just like that !

although, I noticed a freak little short line top left side of Rad. that connects to condenser with red color oil in it ! what the hell is that exactly? I don't know

if any idea please let me know or else I'll just take the risk and do something crazy.

I don't know which side is the return line, but if you take one of the lines off and then start the truck, you will be able to verify that that particular line is either on the pressure side or the return side. Then you can install your after market cooler after it has passed through the radiator.

212F isn't bad at all if its occassional

Transmission overheat light doesn't come on until 260F

Surprised you're still having an issue with the thermostat removed

Driver side of cooler is supply, passenger side is return

truckguy82 thank you so much for the valuable information

Finally I fixed it and it runs perfectly fine, trans temp now is never over 65 degrees !!

to who ever wants to fix a trans cooler and has a truck same like mine here is the plan:

I added the aux cooler hoses into the trans oil circuit. disconnect the bottom right side hose from radiator and insert the new hoses coming from aux cooler. one to radiator and the other one to manufacture oil line. now I am all set and happy with the results

guys thank you so much for everything
