Lights behind 4x4 selector

Just randomly noticed that where my knob says 4L it has a N for neutral but at night it seems like either the light behind the N is either out or there just isn't a light behind it at all. Anyone else with a 4x4 know if there is a light or not just curious?

There is a red light. You have to put the transfer case in neutral for it to light up. It is not illuminated otherwise.

What you are likely seeing is bleed over of the white LED for the 4L through the transparent "N" not a defect or noticeable during the day.

One time when I started my truck, I saw that "N" light up red just for about 2-3 seconds then it went out.

Is that normal, what does that mean?

I do have a Range AFM disabler plugged in, wondering if that was screwing with it?

does this sound like what it is doing?

Use the transfer case knob next to

the steering wheel to shift into and

out of four-wheel drive.

An indicator light displays which

setting the transfer case is in.

N (Neutral) is indicated on the knob.

If the light displays momentarily

when the ignition is in ON/RUN, but

does not stay on, the knob may

have been turned while the vehicle

was off. To see the indicator, turn

the knob to another position so that

it matches the actual transfer case

setting. If no lights display, take the

vehicle to your dealer for service.

I don't believe the knob was turned when the vehicle was off, but maybe it got bumped

Don't know,it never happened again so I don't know.

But thank you for the info

you are very welcome. I did notice that my switch did the same when I went to lunch, neutral light turns red for about 3 seconds when truck is started, going to guess it is normal. never have had an issues with the 4WD system.

Generally, your truck should illuminate all indicator lights upon startup. ABS, traction control, charging problem... probably including the neutral light on the switch. The reason for this is so you can check and see if any are burnt out, or more likely now that they're LEDs, disabled by a seller. If you hop in a truck, turn the key to on and don't see the check engine light, or other key indicators turn on for a few seconds, you're going to want to scan that thing before you buy it.
