Wheel Well Cleaning

Recommended Posts

Posted

Let me first start out by saying I am located in Oklahoma City and will be moving to Dallas, so I am not sure if I am in a region where I need to worry about this.

So in the past, I have owned multiple Sierra/Silverados and always noticed surface rust on the frame in the wheel well. I know it is natural and not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be an eye sore.

What do you guys use to clean the wheel well? Would it be smart to use something to protect it over time?

The picture I found is a husky picture, but I have nothing to do with Husky, just a quick picture I googled.

Any reason for not using the GM wheel well liners?

There is the stock stuff in there, but the frame is still in the open. Maybe I haven't seen the GM wheel well liners.

The liners that Husky sells cover more of the frame, but some is still visible.

You can clean the frame daily, but unless you sandblast it and coat it with something like a spray-in bedliner, once the rust has begun, you will not stop it, only cover it temporarily.

There are products to inhibit (more) rust from forming. I use fluid film on my plow, keeps it from rusting in the off season.

I hate to bring this topic up, but would it just be worth having someone rust proof underneath the truck?

I had a "rust proofing" done under the truck but it is in the form of a heavy grease almost. You cannot bedline everything under the truck because of heat issues from what I understand.

Yes GM and Husky both sell ABS liners that extend below the frame.

Rust converter and be done with it. It will chemically convert the rust to to iron tannate. This will turn rust black, the black is actually the result of another chemical process that is a protective/primer coating to prevent the rust from coming back.

We use chem prime a lot but there are different name products that all do the same stuff. I've never left it uncoated however I don't think it would be an issue to do so.
