I think GM has realized that the OIL and additive package of that oil is the culprit of the GDI VALVE COKING.....not the gas

Top tier won't make a difference in mpg tank to tank over non-top tier, it's down the line that it makes a difference with less carbon buildup etc

How much difference does it make with a direct injection engine? That is the key question.

So I have a question...most gas stations around here have 87-89-93

We have one very large chain of convenience stores (wawa) that sells 87-89-92.

How would they have 92 if they all have the same gas?

seriously curious, not questioning your statement

They mix reg/87 and prem/93 to make midgrade/89

65% reg and 35% prem makes midgrade 89

We don't have 92 in my area; at least that I have ever seen or delivered, but they dilute the prem with a correct amount of reg to get to the desired octane level. Same for if you want to make 92 Oct, maybe something like 15% reg and 85% prem, to get 92 Oct.

^^^

Now adays, stations don't even have midgrade tanks, they only have reg tanks (white lid) and prem tanks (red lid) and the pump itself is sophisticated enough to mix the 2 products right there at the pump to reach the desired octane level.

Totally agree.....I still believe we are all experiments on the Direct Injection thing. I think GM put together some incredible engines with the L83 & L86 ecotecs we just have to find out how to keep the Valve Stems, Seats etc! from becoming major fiasco's I think if we can nail that coffin closed with High quality Oil, oil separators and Top Tier gas as the least important these engines will easily go 200k+

I doubt I could buy gas that is NOT Top Tier without considerable effort in my area.

You're lucky. I have to drive 5 miles out of my way to find anything that's not Speedway.

I just always buy shell. Fill up with 89 always, occasionally fill with their v-power 93

The one "always" and the other "occasionally"?

Dang man, thank you so much for correcting my mistake. You're a life saver.

Costco for me. Cheap and top-tier. Best of both worlds. I'll get it at Get-go to if I have their .10 off promotion. I honestly cannot tell the difference between top-tier and non top-tier.

It's so weird. Costco's gas is about the only brand where I've filled up and noticed my truck kind of bogged and ran worse after filling up. The first time I did, I just blew it off. The next time I filled there, I noticed it again. After a couple months, I tried one more time and it did it again. I haven't filled there since. But here's the crazier thing, my wife fills her '05 Silverado there quite often, and says she has no issues with their gas !

So are Fastrac, Speedway and Kwickfill not top tier since they aren't on the list? Those are where I have always gone as they are usually 5 to 10 cents cheaper than Mobil. Fastrac has a 91 octane ethanol free i was considerig trying in my truck, small engines and atv.

Someone told me that marathon has all the same kind of additives as top tier fuel. He said the reason they are not top tier certified is because they don't want to pay the money to be on their list. Don't know if this is true or not.

I'm a tanker driver; deliver gas and diesel to gas stations for a living; been doing so for 9 years now.

It's all the same gas; exactly the same gas, all stored in the same holding tanks, the only difference is when you load branded gas, that brands additive is injected into the gas when loading. The additive is a detergent, so if you load BP branded it adds the BP detergent "invigorate" and will be marked as so on the bill of lading. But if you load BP unbranded you still get the exact same gas, from the same storage tanks, it just doesn't add the BP branded additive/detergent "invigorate"

Same for all other terminals, citgo, Sunoco, shell, ECT.

And all the terminals in my area are fed the exact same gas and diesel through the same pipe line that branches off to each individual terminal, to there storage tanks, but the gas is the same no matter what terminal your loading at. Most comes down the colonial pipeline, and some does come by barges.

While not currently a tanker driver, I have done that in the past and can confirm what Bob said. The only difference in gas is the additives shot into the fuel stream as it is loaded on the tanker that matches what the end retailer wants. Even premium is just the same regular but has octane boosters added in the stream. The only appreciable difference in gasoline is the conditions it is stored at the retailer and the volume of their sales, which insures high fuel turnover and the freshest gas.
